Position Summary:
The Mechanic/Ground Supervisor is responsible for overseeing grounds maintenance operations and performing skilled mechanical work on district vehicles lawn equipment and other machinery. This position ensures that school grounds are safe clean and well-maintained year-round and that all equipment and vehicles are in proper working order to support daily operations across the district.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise grounds crew staff including assigning tasks overseeing work quality and ensuring safe work practices.
- Schedule and perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of district-owned vehicles and equipment (e.g. mowers tractors snowblowers utility vehicles trailers).
- Conduct routine inspections of grounds and equipment to identify hazards maintenance needs and improvement opportunities.
- Oversee seasonal grounds care operations including snow removal lawn mowing tree trimming weed control and irrigation system upkeep.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance vehicle service logs and parts inventory.
- Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors for specialized repairs or services as needed.
- Monitor and maintain grounds supply inventory; order supplies and parts within budgetary guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and district policies.
- Train grounds crew members on proper equipment operation and maintenance procedures.
- Respond to emergencies such as snowstorms equipment breakdowns or facility access issues often during non-standard hours.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Formal training in automotive or small engine repair preferred.
- Minimum three years of experience in groundskeeping facilities maintenance or vehicle/equipment repair.
- Experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
Certificates Licenses Registrations:
- Valid drivers license required; commercial drivers license (CDL) preferred or willingness to obtain.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures and landscape equipment.
- Skill in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical systems in small engines and vehicles.
- Ability to lead and motivate staff manage schedules and delegate tasks effectively.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Basic computer skills including spreadsheets word processing calendar management and Computerized Maintenance Management (CMMS)
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
- Work is performed both indoors (in garages or shops) and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Requires frequent standing walking bending lifting (up to 75 lbs) and use of hand/power tools.
- Exposure to loud noise fumes dust and machinery hazards is typical.
Terms of Employment:
- Full-time 12-month position.
