Job Description

Title: Educational Interpreter for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Location: Kent ISD Deaf/Hard of Hearing Total Communication Program

BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision educational interpreters act as facilitators of communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students and non-signing members of the school community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a member of the educational team Educational Interpreters:

  1. Support the implementation of a students IEP.
  2. Use the appropriate modality and language.
  3. Interpret at the appropriate language level of a student.
  4. Clearly convey all aspects of meaning and content.
  5. Make sure the goal of the lesson is clear.
  6. Make appropriate use of fingerspelling.
  7. Facilitate and support participation and social communication.
  8. Monitor student comprehension.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. A qualified interpreter certification as defined in the Michigan Compiled Laws and known as the Deaf Persons Interpreter Act who has been approved at EIPA Level BEI Level or NIC.
    1. Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university
  2. Interpersonal characteristics: Ability to maintain cooperative working relationship with students staff parents and the general public while maintaining student confidentiality.
  3. Effectiveness as a Team Member: Willingness to work as part of a team of professionals.
  4. Flexibility Attendance & Dependability: Demonstrated dependability and promptness.
  5. Professionalism & Confidentiality: Ability to interpret/transliterate in classes where deaf students are mainstreamed and a working knowledge of the Code of Ethics of the RID.
  6. Attire: Appropriate attire to support visual needs of student.
  7. Respect: Understanding patient warm and receptive attitude toward students and school community.
  8. Preparation: Ability to read write and communicate in English to understand directions and communicate with students and staff.
  9. Professional Development: Will complete continuing education units required by state of Michigan in order to maintain licensure.
  10. Advocate for student needs: Ability to understand and work with children of all ages.
  11. Must pass criminal background check as required by School Safety Legislation.
  12. Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity social justice and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities. Demonstrates the ability to examine the impact of education inequities in student achievement outcomes as it aligns with race ethnicity and socio-economic status.
