Job Description

The James Hutton Institute is seeking to appoint a research scientist to join our Social Economic and Geographical Sciences (SEGS) department. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary research addressing contemporary social and economic challenges. The successful candidate will work on a range of funded projects including those within the Scottish Governments Strategic Research Programme () as well as projects funded by other organisations such as UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the European Union specifically including one project considering change in rural communities.

Please note this position is fixed term for 14 months.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design manage and administer research projects.
  • Collaborate within interdisciplinary research teams to deliver project outcomes.
  • Conduct data collection management and analysis using appropriate qualitative quantitative or mixed methods.
  • Prepare and submit articles for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Assist in securing future research funding.
  • Contribute to the efficient operation of an applied interdisciplinary social science department.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • PhD in a relevant social science discipline.
  • Experience of working with communities and other stakeholders
  • Interest in the work of the department and wider institute.
  • Potential to publish high-quality peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Strong team-working skills.
  • Effective organisational and time management skills.
  • Strong oral communication skills.
  • Track record of publication in academic journals.

Desirable:

  • Experience in applying for research funding.
  • Experience in designing and implementing mixed methods research.
  • Engagement in a relevant scholarly association/society.
  • Interest in working with scientists beyond the social sciences (e.g. computational sciences ecological sciences).
  • Awareness of the open science movement and interest in applying open science principles within the social sciences.
