If you have a degree in social science behavior health science public health or related field encompassed with a passion for making a difference in our communities by way of reducing the impact of substance abuse and mental health become an integral part of a dedicated team of professionals at the Division of Substance Use & Mental Health (SUMH) who contribute to the development of healthy individuals families and communities on a daily basis!

Principal Duties
The Zero Suicide Program Manager supports the SUMH in carrying out a state suicide prevention program which may include (but is not limited to) the following components: zero suicide technical assistance and training; evidence-based suicide risk assessment tools and training; suicide prevention gatekeeper training; evidence-based intervention training; intervention skills training; postvention support and training; and quality improvement technical assistance and training.

The Suicide Prevention Program Manager also has responsibilities in supporting contracting and overseeing statewide implementation of Utahs National Strategy for Suicide Prevention grant award and the SUMH Zero Suicide goals. This includes overseeing activities relating to reducing access to lethal means of suicide; researching creating and/or disseminating resources and tools specific to various elements of the Zero Suicide framework; and collaborating with partners in health and behavioral healthcare to implement Zero Suicide statewide.

They communicate regularly and closely collaborate with Utahs Local Mental Health and Substance Abuse Authorities and with key stakeholders at the state county and local levels. They assess training and technical assistance needs; and provide and coordinate training activities. They administer policies programs and operations within the Division as they relate to suicide prevention and may be required to write legislative and other outcome reports and recommendations. In addition they perform the following tasks:


  • Managing and providing oversight for statewide programs/operations for suicide prevention activities across Utah.
  • Functioning under very general direction they plan direct and evaluate programs administered by the DSAMH; assist in the budgeting process; implement program strategies; and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Building and maintaining ongoing partnerships with key stakeholders including health and behavioral health care organizations public health agencies social service agencies advocacy organizations and others to move project initiatives forward.
  • Determining program goals and objectives and/or chairing committees established to support the program.
  • Conducting training needs assessments and recommending training programs.
  • Formulating ongoing progress and data reporting and communicating progress to partners and oversight agencies.
  • Facilitating the use of research data to improve existing programs and utilization of resources.

  • Establishes effective work relationships and demonstrates willingness and ability to collaborate with others.
  • Strives for continuous improvement of existing policies internal and external controls and procedures.
  • Strives to understand prevention intervention and implementation science and dedicated to managing the most effective efficient prevention system possible.
  • Utilizes information and techniques needed to rehabilitate physical and mental ailments and provide career guidance including alternative treatments rehabilitation equipment and its proper use and methods to evaluate treatment effectiveness.
  • Is able to carry out behavioral programs in a consistent and creative manner.

Preferences
Preference may be given to candidates who:
  • Have clinical experience in providing treatment or crisis services to individuals at risk of suicide or who have administrative experience in treatment/crisis settings.
  • Hold one of the following degrees: Master of Social Worker Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy Masters in Professional Counseling Master of Psychology Masters in Public Administration Masters in Health Administration or other Behavioral Health related Masters Degree.

Note: as of April 8 2024 DHHS employees will be working a hybrid schedule which includes 2 office days per week and 3 telework days.

  • Typically you will sit comfortably to perform the work; however you may do some walking; standing; bending; carry light items; or drive an automobile etc.

Working Conditions
  • You will be exposed to risks found in the typical office setting which is adequately lighted heated and ventilated e.g. safe use of office equipment avoiding trips and falls observing fire regulations etc.
