Job Description

Substitute Teacher Mentor (Temporary)

Virtual Learning Academy of St. Clair County is a public-school academy chartered by St. Clair County RESA. VLA is a fully accredited high school governed by its own board of education and provides an alternative education opportunity to students in grades 6-12 up to the age of 22 who reside in St. Clair County. VLA offers students flexibility utilizing online curriculum individualized education plans and excellent teacher to student ratios. VLA creates a place where students belong and where staff work to ensure students find their own path to success.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a maximum 37.5 hours a week non-union at-will temporary position reporting directly to the principal of Virtual Learning Academy. The substitute teacher mentor will be responsible for delivering supplemental instruction and tutoring according to school board approved curriculum standards and for mentoring and managing a caseload of students through regular communication establishing attendance plans setting goals and monitoring progress.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate preferred (not required).
  • Experience working with technology; familiar with an online learning environment.
  • Experience or interest working with at-risk youth.
  • Ability to maintain a professional rapport with students parents staff and the community.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist students through 1-on-1 and remote (chat site) mentoring and tutoring in online coursework across all content areas.
  2. Communicate and collaborate with VLA teacher mentors support staff and administrative staff to support student learning.
  3. Maintain student records.
  4. Communicate with parents/guardians about student progress.
  5. Participate in professional development and staff meetings as directed by the building principal.
  6. Inspire and motivate students to achieve high school credits toward diploma and to find their path to success in life.

THE LIST OF ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILILITES IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE AND MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED AS NECESSARY

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment Date: Pending Board approval and successful completion of employee drug screening and background checks start date would be July 28 2025.

*VLA is closed August 25-September 1 November 14 26-28 December 22-January 2.

Duration: 16 weeks

Daily Rate: $125

Fringes: none
