Safety Manager Purpose:
Colonnas Shipyard is seeking a Safety Manager to oversee in Norfolk VA. The Safety Manager oversees and executes all aspects of the Companys occupational health and safety programs and related activities to include compliance with regulatory matters by ensuring safe operations throughout the organization (shipyard and industrial fabrication environments). This position manages the development/implementation of safety procedures reviews/investigates safety accidents and injuries and supports Workers Compensation. As a priority the Safety Manager ensures a safe workplace through education training ongoing monitoring/surveillance and enforcement of policies/procedures.

Job Description: - Direct the ongoing safety program to ensure job safety accident prevention and support continuous improvements to the program.
- Develop implement and manage company safety procedures processes and programs which ensure the safe operations of the organization to include compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other local state and federal regulations.
- Oversee and lead investigations documentation and analysis of accidents and injuries determining root cause and future preventative measures and maintain a follow-up system to ensure necessary corrective action is promptly implemented.
- Develop deliver document and track effectiveness of behavior-based safety awareness training programs that contribute to increased awareness of core safety program elements
- Regularly conduct and oversee jobsite inspections audits and surveillance focused on hazard recognition code violations unsafe or incorrect work behaviors/activities etc. of all personnel onsite (management/employees contracted/temporary personnel third-party representatives vendors visitors etc.).
- Ensure the workforce is provided with and properly utilizes suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) and assist departments in the evaluation/selection of needed safety equipment.
- Effectively manage programs overseeing toxic substances hazards carcinogens and other safety information and effectively communicate to department heads workforce and other stakeholders.
- Lead develop or coordinate supervisory new hire and contractor training programs which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness.
- Responsible for serving as a technical resource to support employees at all levels on safety-related issues.
- Maintain sound administrative controls including effective levels of documentation of health and safety records OSHA logs written safety plans training records and other reporting requirements.
- Serve as an effective Company representative in meetings seminars committees audits investigations etc. with both internal and external stakeholders and interested parties.
- Take collaborative approach to conduct/participate in department and organizational meetings promoting open lines of communication with other team members while serving as the subject matter expert on safety-related matters.
- Provide training development and supervision to support personnel and direct staff.
- Maintain flexibility in schedule to include nights and weekends as position may regularly work hours beyond a standard schedule. Must have regular reliable attendance with the ability to respond and service safety matters as needed.
- Manage a department of safety professionals consisting of Safety Inspectors and Competent Persons
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: - Must have a Bachelors degree in occupational health/safety science related field or equivalent experience and/with at least 5 years related experience (in maritime shipbuilding/ship repair or industrial fabrication environments).
- Must have demonstrated knowledge of Federal (as well as state local etc.) safety regulations and experience performing job safety analysis.
- Ability to obtain/maintain CPR and first aid training certifications is required.
- Must have knowledge of maritime rules and regulations required: OSHA NFPA NIOSH ANSI EPA and State and Local regulations.
- Must be able to obtain/maintain credentialing applicable to entry into military bases shipyards customer/vendor sites etc.
- Must have/maintain a current valid Drivers License with acceptable driving record that allows for the operation of company vehicles.
- Must have demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to influence and motivate others to quickly achieve results.
- Must have exceptional oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner.
- Must have command of basic office tools and programs required to include Microsoft Office suite of products (particularly Outlook Word Excel).
Desired Qualifications: - Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
- Knowledge of NAVSEA/MSC/USCG Standard Items preferred.

Travel Requirements: - Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements: - Sit Stand Walk Bend Squat Climb Reach Push and Pull Stoop Crawl Kneel Balance Lift and Carry various objects and equipment.
- General office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require standing and walking for up to 30% of the time.
- Lighting and temperature are adequate and there is minimal exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise dust etc. Hear talk and smell.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work is generally performed within an office environment with standard office equipment available but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
- A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer.
- Must be able to climb up and down stairs and spend time moving throughout the facility and onboard marine vessels.
