Job Description

This position requires safe and efficient operation of school buses for the purpose of transporting preschool children attending LCCAP Early Learning programs. The highest level of service safety and confidentiality is expected which meets transportation program requirements. This is a safety-sensitive position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Obtain assignments through the Transportation Office. Record all requested data on daily manifests including cancellations no-shows vehicle mileage starting and ending and any other data collection as assigned or verbally requested by the Transportation Office.
Drivers must use push-to-talk cellular radios to communicate with dispatch and other drivers while on route. Drivers must always keep the push-to-talk cellular radio within hearing distance except for scheduled break periods.
Drivers are responsible for keeping their vehicles neat by picking up trash and sweeping the floor. This should be done during down times in the course of the day.
Drivers must fuel vehicles during down times during their work shift using their assigned PIN Number and designated fuel cards for their vehicles. Recording of fueling and DEF fluid checks must be made on the manifest cover sheets. Vehicle fluids must be checked when requested by the maintenance shop or supervisors.
Exercise sound judgment in an emergency including making the decision whether to evacuate the bus. Notify dispatch immediately in the event of a vehicular accident any damage to the school bus or other property.
Follow all company policies and PA vehicle code regarding the safe operation of school buses.
Perform a thorough pre-trip inspection before operating a school bus.
Drivers must be willing to drive any route as assigned. Route assignments are determined by management with consideration given to employees seniority and experience.
No Monitor or Bus Driver is ever to take it upon his/herself to alter any stop.
Drivers must be seated behind the wheel before any child enters the bus at any time. Drivers are to remain seated behind the wheel until all children exit the bus. In the event it is necessary for a driver to leave the drivers seat and children are on board the monitor must remain in the drivers seat until the driver returns.
Responsible for building and maintaining positive relationships with children and families and for responding professionally in challenging situations including interactions with upset parents or disruptive children.
Demonstrates a willingness to learn about autism and other developmental disabilities. Recognizes that challenging behavior often indicates a child is experiencing difficulty not intentionally being difficult.
Approaches all children and families with empathy patience and respect regardless of background or circumstances.
Responsible for promoting positive relationships and clear communication with coworkers and Early Learning staff who assist with bus transportation
Attend monthly safety meetings and other training courses as required by management.
Other duties may be assigned by management.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: There are no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Individuals must have and maintain satisfactory; Criminal Child Abuse and FBI-Fingerprinting Clearances and a clean Motor Vehicle Record. Individuals must pass a pre-hire drug and alcohol test DOT and School Bus Physicals and complete a National Sex Offender Registry certification. Prior to employment an individual must pass a tuberculous test. Employees must submit to random post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing and periodic DOT physicals as part of their continued employment. This is a safety-sensitive position.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Graduate or GED. Minimum of one (1) year professional driving experience in same or similar capacity.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules policies and procedures. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Must be able to speak read and write the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential job duties.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS: Commercial Driver License Class B with a Passenger and School Bus Endorsement.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described in this section are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
While performing the duties described herein the employee is regularly required to talk hear lift/carry up to 50 lbs. usually up to 25 lbs. Ability to stay seated and drive for at least two (2) hours at a time. Frequent standing and walking. Frequent climbing of steps in and out of vehicle. Drivers will be required to bend twist stoop crouch crawl squat and kneel reach forward and reach overhead. Requires full functional use of both the right and left hand. Drivers must be able to operate foot control with their right foot and have functional use of their left foot. Eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity is necessary. Specific vision capabilities required by this position include close vision distance vision peripheral vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

This position involves travel throughout Lawrence County with the majority of the workday spent aboard a school bus providing transportation for preschool-aged children. Employees may be exposed to various weather conditions and are expected to perform all duties regardless of the weather. The work environment typically includes moderate noise levels common behaviors of young children and exposure to diesel fumes and other typical bus-related odors. Monitors must be comfortable working in close quarters and maintaining a calm supportive presence in a dynamic and sometimes loud environment.
