GEAR UP Tutor - Avenal High School

Wonderful College Prep Academy is accepting applications for a part-time Tutor in the GEAR UP program at Avenal High School. GEAR UP Tutors will follow the student cohorts through their high school years.  Workdays will align with the Reef-Sunset Unified School District and Wonderful College Prep Academy calendars. This position will report to the GEAR UP Coordinator in Avenal CA. This is an in-person position.  

Assignments will be approximately 30 hours per week in the after-school programs during lunch periods and/or during class times (mornings and/or afternoons). Workdays will be in alignment with Wonderful College Prep Academy Districts calendar with occasional hours on Saturday. This position will report to the GEAR UP Manager.

Schedule: 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM Monday - Thursday.

The Tutors responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

1. Collaborate with and provide support for teachers instructional assistants and administrators at school sites.
2. Work directly with students to provide various academic support services (i.e. tutoring assisting with the completion of forms and assisting with workshops).
3. Assist in the planning organization and implementation of GEAR UP grant activities.
4. Perform related duties as assigned

ABOUT THE GEAR UP GRANT: GEAR UP is a federally funded Title III Grant. Wonderful College Prep Academy in partnership with Avenal and Sanger Unified School Districts works with 6th and 7th-grade students from four middle schools to prepare them for college. The Federal Department of Education website for GEAR UP is This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides seven-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school and their first year of college.

Qualifications :

• College graduate or be enrolled in college and have completed freshman English college math (Algebra II)
• At least one year of tutoring experience
• An eager flexible learner and problem solver who feels comfortable taking initiative
• A self-starter with an exceptional work ethic and the ability to work well away from colleagues and management
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
• An ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with scholars
• Bilingual in Spanish is a plus

Pay: $18.00/Hour.
