At BlueScope were looking for passionate future-focused students who are ready to start their journey into the world of engineering.  Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for Materials Engineering Cadets who are ready to commence in January 2026.  

Our Cadetship program at BlueScope creates an opportunity to accelerate your personal and professional growth as you combine paid work with study; a two-for-one situation placing you far ahead of your peers!

Cadetships provide a combination of part-time study and part-time work where you will attend university classes one day a week. If you are commencing straight from year 12 you will work casually for your first year and attend university full-time.  

What Will You Do

Youll learn about and be exposed to the relationship between the structure and properties of materials and their economic application. 

Rotating through various departments youll apply scientific principles to solve a range of technological problems acrossphysicschemistryandmathematics. These rotations will allow you to try a bit of everything; allowing you to find the perfect fit for your BlueScope boots. Amongst many stimulating activities youll also assist in the design and control of the processes for producing shaping treating and testing our materials.

Depending on the stage of your rotation you may be working within a: 

  • Lab environment testing the quality and chemistry composition of the steel we manufacture 
  • Team (operations based) to manage the flow of work to ensure we meet the production schedule 
  • Department or processing line to ensure our quality standards are maintained and are updated to ensure we exceed our customers expectations 
  • Technical role solving production or quality improvements refining the efficiency ofthe process

  • Are you a Year 12 student whos ready to turn your curiosity into a career and has the subjects lined up to study Materials Engineering at the University of Wollongong (UOW)
  • Or maybe youre already at university (in your 1st or 2nd year) currently studying or open to transferring into Materials Engineering at UOW
  • Do you want to be part of a team where youll do real hands-on work that matters helping shape not only how we work and what we create but also the world we live in
