Job Description

Job Summary

The School Health Social Worker serves as a liaison between the home school and community to support students academic success emotional well-being and social development. Assesses student needs and provides individual group and family counseling. Collaborates with school staff families and external agencies to address barriers to physical and mental health. Responsibilities include crisis intervention counseling services prevention and intervention services assessments case management and advocacy for students and families. Supports students experiencing trauma mental health issues or family challenges and promotes a safe school environment.

Job Specific Duties

  • Conducts psychosocial assessments behavioral measurements and classroom observations. Develops intervention plans tailored to student and family needs and implements evidence based therapeutic techniques to address issues such as anxiety depression trauma or family difficulties.
  • Effectively manages caseload while prioritizing cases based on urgency and impact.
  • Participates in diverse departmental or hospital projects/activities committees initiatives and support/educational groups.
  • Accountable to take the lead on trauma child abuse and domestic violence cases. Reports cases to appropriate community agencies for further investigation per hospital and MDCPS policies.
  • Provides individual group and family counseling to address academic emotional behavioral and social challenges impacting student performance and well-being.
  • Collaborates with teachers school staff and families to support students academic and emotional success.
  • Provides crisis intervention including de-escalation assessment and recommendations in alignment with MDCPS and hospitals Baker Act protocols.
  • Follows up with students and families regarding results from school-wide and grade wide depressive screeners when risk is identified and provides appropriate referrals support and intervention.
  • Serves as a liaison between the school families and community agencies to coordinate services and resources.
  • Follows up on referrals from school staff in a timely manner ensuring communication and coordination of services between social work and school personnel.
  • Delivers school-wide preventive education to students staff and parents on topics such as mental health social media risks bullying and emotional regulation.
  • Maintains accurate timely and confidential documentation of services provided using designated electronic health record system in compliance with federal state and hospital guidelines.
  • Promotes culturally responsive practices and demonstrate knowledge of diverse cultural and religious perspectives.
  • Upholds professional ethics and confidentiality in accordance with laws regulation hospital and school policies.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Masters Degree in Mental Health related field or Social Work
  • American Heart Association BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • American Heart Association First Aid - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • Level II Background Check
  • 1-3 years of experience in a pediatric health care related setting

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Expertise in crisis intervention and risk assessment preferred.
  • Expertise in pediatric growth and development preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to adapt and react calmly in stressful situations.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong patient and family advocacy skills.
  • Expertise in coordinating and facilitating support groups.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information and adheres to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of various therapeutic interventions including but not limited to Family Systems Therapy Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Trauma informed therapy Strength-Based approaches and Solution-Focused techniques.
  • Knowledge of diverse cultural ethnic and religious backgrounds and how this perspective influence behavior family dynamic and community interaction.
  • Knowledge of State of Florida laws regarding child abuse and neglect domestic violence and Baker Act procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to uphold and maintain the laws of confidentiality and ethical standards in accordance with FERPA HIPPA and NASW code of ethics ensuring the privacy and protection of all patients and family information.
