Job Description Summary:

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the respiratory care services manager the Pulmonary Function Technician Lead will perform all outpatient pulmonary function test as ordered by the physician. This position requires experience of all pulmonary function testing procedures equipment patient instruction and interpretation of testing data. Working independently indebt knowledge of pulmonary function lab equipment infection prevention processes and equipment calibration is required.

IV. JOB SPECIFICATIONS

A. EDUCATION

Graduate of a Respiratory Therapy program accredited from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) as reviewed and approved through the Respiratory Care Board of California and registry eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) required 2-year Associate Degree of Respiratory Therapy required/ Bachelor Degree of Respiratory Therapy preferred

B. EXPERIENCE

5 years recent experience in respiratory or pulmonary care required 5 years recent experience in pulmonary function testing and diagnostic interpretation required Experience with arterial blood gas sampling analysis and interpretation required Knowledge in the development of educational materials for patients preferred

C. PREREQUISITE SKILLS

The Pulmonary Function Technician Lead must demonstrate the ability to perform and interpret with accuracy all required diagnostic pulmonary function testing in accordance with established laboratory and bronchodilator testing procedures and regulatory guidelines. The Pulmonary Function Technician Lead must be able to set up and calibrate equipment using precision gas mixtures or other methods to ensure equipment complies with regulatory testing guidelines. Knowledge of pulmonary physiology anatomy and respiratory pharmacology Excellent verbal and written skills to work effectively with staff physicians and patients Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks Ability to manage and maintain confidential information Knowledge of computer applications data and time management Uses professional ethical judgment and critical thinking when performing their duties Knowledge of cleaning processes in accordance with approved infection prevention hospital requirements

V. LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION

Current licensure by the California State Respiratory Care Examining Committee of the Medical Board as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) required at hire American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technician (RPFT) required at hire

Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics date of service insurance/billing medical record summary information and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.

VIII. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

A. ESSENTIAL (not modifiable)

Expert in performing all tests related to pulmonary function testing. Performs pulmonary function diagnostic testing to assist physicians in diagnosis treatment monitoring and evaluation of cardiopulmonary pathology. Performs all PFT tests as defined in the role of a pulmonary function technician Observes infection prevention control policies. Appropriately cleans and disinfects pulmonary function equipment between patients. Utilizes UV light appropriately. Understands dwell times and cleaning procedures for all pulmonary function equipment. Documents and maintains records of patient treatment and response to pulmonary function testing in the patients medical record. Required to learn APeX for departmental workflows billing scheduling and follow up patient education. Reports malfunctioning equipment to respiratory therapy manager as well ensuring that all equipment is clean and in working condition. Performs appropriate decontamination and cleaning of equipment prior to sterilization. All discontinued equipment is to be processed by end of the workday. Acts as a subject matter expert Assist with training and orientation of new employees Coordinate the work flow among employees within the work area Help with educating staff on technical or functional operations and task Advise management of inventory and supply levels Participates in the daily work of their classification within the department Call and find alternative coverage for staffing level needs Assist management with scheduling changes and approve necessary overtime in the absence of management Determine sick call replacement Maintain and monitor PFT Breeze suite software and that it is accurate and meeting current ATS guidelines Audits and corrects PFT tests in Breeze suite to ensure corrections and accuracy is in place before sending for physician interpretation Acts as a liaison with the Pulmonology team for ensuring transparent communication for tests performed ordering accuracy and correct billing Instructs patients and/ or family in the operation and cleaning of various breathing devices such as flutter valves and incentive spirometers. Also instructs in the use of physician prescribed inhalers spacers nebulizers and other equipment as designated by the physician. Performs six-minute oxygen walk test. Orientation and training of other RCP staff to the pulmonary function lab operations and functions as required. Assist in the ordering of the pulmonary function lab supplies in conjunction with the Lead RCP or respiratory therapy manager. Works with vendors to ensure equipment is kept up to date and that required periodic service and maintenance are completed. Arterial blood gas sampling and interpretation required.

B. SECONDARY (modifiable)

1. Assists patient care unit staff with referrals to vendors for home respiratory equipment.

2. Assists with clerical and other duties as assigned.

3. Assists with orientation of new staff as assigned.

4. Grade pulmonary function tests and prepare for interpretations for physician.

Under the supervision of the manager for respiratory care serves as a liaison and resource (expert) to other departments and medical staff; also assist with various special projects and new program development. Other duties as assigned.
