Job Description

Academic Faculty Contract 171-day Benefits Eligible

WNC Faculty should anticipate being assigned to teach one or more classes at any of the WNC campuses or rural centers and to teach via distance learning. This position will primarily be located on our Carson City Campus. This position is subject to a background check. This position is being filled through an emergency appointment. Appointment to the role on a permanent basis is contingent upon meeting additional recruitment requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assume a leadership role in the delivery of the medical/surgical nursing curriculum in the classroom laboratory and clinical environments

  • Collaborate with other nursing faculty in the instruction of medical/surgical and other related nursing content

  • Prepare and present lecture/discussion and laboratory learning experiences which incorporate active and alternative teaching methodologies

  • Participate in traditional and/or non-traditional classroom/laboratory settings and web-based courses as assigned; work with current faculty to utilize simulation learning and evaluation activities

  • Perform at a level that reflects scholarship and evidence-based teaching and clinical practices

  • Correct assignments quizzes examinations and care plans in a timely manner using the agreed-upon grading policy

  • Educate and supervise students in laboratory and clinical settings (days evenings nights and weekends) in Carson City Reno and rural sites as assigned

  • Participate in nursing faculty committee meetings college-wide/departmental meetings and professional development activities

  • Complete tasks in a timely manner and be self-directed after initial orientation to assignments

  • Maintain professional performance that reflects scholarship and evidence-based teaching and clinical practices

  • Participate in community service activities

  • Participate in program review and academic program assessment

  • Perform all responsibilities set forth in Board of Regents Handbook. Title 2 Chapter 4 Section 4.4.2. Standards for Recommending Appointment with Tenure

  • Perform safely in a latex environment

  • Participate in maintaining an environment of civility and non-discrimination

  • Comply with published college and program policies and procedures

  • Perform other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Masters degree with a major in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university

  • Competency in current medical/surgical nursing practice required. Preference will be given to candidates with additional competencies in pediatric maternal child and/or simulation experience

  • Minimum of recent four years clinical experiences in an acute care setting. Academic teaching experience will be considered in lieu of clinical practice

  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in Nevada or eligibility for such licensure

  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty staff students community resource personnel and patients/residents

  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the college and the philosophy of the nursing program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College classroom and/or clinical teaching curriculum development instructional design and laboratory simulation and supervision

Minimum Starting Salary Information:

The minimum of the placement range for this position is $74592. The salary grade is based on the selected candidates level of academic preparation: COMMUNITY COLLEGE ACADEMIC SALARY GRADES. The selected candidate will be placed at or above the minimum based on years of related professional experience. WNCs placement range falls within the NSHE salary schedule: ACADEMIC SALARY SCHEDULE-COMMUNITY COLLEGES.

Retirement NSHE Faculty Retirement Plan Alternative (RPA)

All faculty and professional staff working at least half-time equivalent must participate in the NSHE Faculty Retirement Plan Alternative (RPA) as a condition of employment. The current contribution rate is 17.5%. Your contribution is matched by the College at 17.5% for a total contribution rate of 35%.

Your contributions are made by pre-tax salary reduction and you are 100% vested from your first day. You choose how to invest your own and NSHEs contributions. The plan administrator provides dedicated financial consultants that are available to assist you in your investment deliberations. NSHE provides participants with a three-tiered investment line-up that provides investment options for everyone from the less engaged investor to the investor who prefers to more actively manage their retirement savings. Faculty and staff who have previously participated in the Public Employees Retirement System of Nevada (PERS) may be required to continue participation in PERS.

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) does not participate in the federal Social Security System but does contribute to the federal Medicare program. This means that while you are employed by NSHE neither you nor NSHE contribute to Social Security and you do not earn a Social Security benefit.
