PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to 40200 depending on relevant skills knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Please note this role is based at our Salford Media City offices and you will be required to work from the office.
Are you passionate about investigations and telling difficult stories that other people dont want told The multi-award-winning File on 4 Investigates series is looking for an outstanding journalist to produce important and high-impact programmes for Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. We are part of the wider Long Form Audio team making many different programmes and podcasts for Radio 4 5 Live and the World Service. Youll be expected to generate a steady stream of programme ideas which will resonate with our established audience and encourage new listeners.

File on 4 Investigates is renowned for producing high impact radio programmes that resonate at home and abroad. The team has won the ARIA Gold Award for best factual documentary three years running (and 2024) and silver at the 2025 awards. Were looking to capitalise on this success by generating more radio programmes and podcasts that stop listeners in their tracks and demand to be listened to.
We are looking for a producer who has the intelligence and high-level analytical skills to find dissect and present impartial evidence on complicated issues. You will be used to dealing with controversial stories and you will have the storytelling skills to turn them into engaging and lively output. Youll be constantly looking for new ways to tell your stories and to engage new and younger audiences.
You will be able to demonstrate a commitment to original journalism. Experience of making and shaping long-form documentaries as a producer will be a considerable advantage. Experience and skills in online and social media will also be desirable.
Above all you will need to show a curious mind and the ability to come up with ideas that have the potential to make their own headlines. You will be required to work flexibly according to programme deadlines.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
Youll produce radio programmes and podcasts to a high quality with emphasis on sound and editorial focus.
Youll be a skilled journalist with very strong attention to detail.
Youll have strong writing and production skills and be able to apply these skills to longer form content.
Youll understand how to tell a story creatively with the audience central to your thinking.
Youll know how to research and find relevant and engaging guests.
Youll work with social media producers to produce digital content and create impact.
Youll understand editorial and legal issues and have a clear understanding of the BBCs Editorial Guidelines.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
A strong background and interest in news and current affairs.
Experience of using digital audio software including Highlander/VCS.
An ability to demonstrate how you have reflected diversity in your work as a journalist.
A understanding of how to achieve maximum impact for the programmes you work on.
DESIRED (BUT NOT REQUIRED):
It is preferable that you will have digital content production skills and experience.
You will be able to demonstrate insights into the podcast and audio market.
