Job Description

JOB GOAL:

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision the Lab Technician is responsible for the support and coordination of learning activities and laboratories related to Parks and Natural Resources under the direction of the Agricultural Sciences Department. Individual must work cooperatively with college personnel department personnel and students. May require some evening and weekend work.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare for indoor and outdoor class labs by reserving vans and equipment and organizing and loading equipment tools and materials needed for labs prior to lab start time.
  • Work with faculty to transport students materials tools and equipment to lab sites and effectively work with students throughout the labs to accomplish lab objectives.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in the horticulture shop and maintain facilities grounds Department Laboratories to include but not limited to the campus swan pond area including routine checks on care and feeding of trumpeter swans Atherton Wetland trail maintenance prairie maintenance etc.
  • Ability to work with students unsupervised in a lab setting. Conduct interpretive programs and group visits to the college.
  • Operate and have a working knowledge of a variety of equipment used for instruction including mowers tractors skid loader chainsaws hand power tools etc.
  • Operate basic computer programs including Word Outlook and Excel to routinely communicate with others track maintenance accomplishments reconcile P-card submit electronic time sheets reserve vehicles etc.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

  • Be able to work within a team environment and gain cooperation across departments.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings that consists of 40 hours per week.
  • Assume responsibility; deal effectively with problems and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.
  • Able to prioritize and complete tasks as required.
  • Attention to detail and an ability to complete complex tasks without errors.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to work effectively in an environment where interruptions of work in progress occur frequently where work on multiple projects is common and where timelines on project completion are tight.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills (multitasking).

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing pushing pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting walking repetitive motion talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A.A.S. degree in a related field

LICENSES CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Valid drivers license with a good driving record.
  • Obtain within 6 months of hire CDL Class A with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Obtain S-130/190 Wildland Fire Training.
  • Iowa Pesticide Applicators License Core Cat 23OT 5 and 6 (or ability to obtain).
  • CPR/First Aid (or ability to obtain training).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSLICENSES CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Degree in Parks and Natural Resources
  • 2 years of related experience
