Job Description

The Communication & Presentation coach position supports the Learning Commons mission by assisting students in their public speaking and communication assignments and activities. They provide support for students in a wide range of ways including: outline creation & support audience analysis organization structure visual aids and delivery.

The Learning Commons Communication & Presentation Coaching supports student public speaking activities across all disciplines and for all levels. Students may visit the center to address a wide variety of concerns including public speaking apprehension outline support delivery visual aids and group presentation support. We strive to ensure students are able to develop their confidence speaking in front of groups small and large.

Coaches provide tutoring aid as student peers to students at all stages of their speech from narrowing the topic to outlining to support with delivery. Students are welcome to come into the center at any point in the construction process. Our coaches understand that public speaking is often a source of apprehension and they provide specific support to those that would like to reduce their apprehension and increase their confidence. Support is provided both one-on-one and in groups.

To thrive in this role candidates should have at least one semester of higher level learning completed at UAA. Preference may be given to full-time students. Additional skills that may benefit an application include: Work or volunteer experience in a university setting; customer service experience; and general knowledge of common software such as the Google suite Zoom and Blackboard.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:
Sophomore Junior or Senior standing at UAA and currently taking at least 6 credits
Minimum of one (1) year (at 20 hours per week) of work/volunteer experience
3.0 Cumulative GPA
Completed oral communication GER course (COMM 111 or COMM 241)
Working knowledge of effective public speaking techniques
Effective communication skills
Capacity to work with students with diverse backgrounds

Preferred Education and Experience:
At least one semester of your higher level learning completed at UAA
Preference may be given to full-time students and/or students eligible for work study
Work/volunteer experience in a university setting
Customer service experience
General knowledge of common software

Position Details:

The position is located at the University of Alaska campus in Anchorage. This is a part-time non-exempt student 2 position with pay rate of $15.26 per hour.
