The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Boat Officer 1 or Boat Officer 2 located in Kodiak!


What you will be doing:

This position serves as an able-body seaman aboard theR/V Resolution. The position is a Flexible Staffed Boat Officer 1 or Boat Officer 2 position depending on certifications and experience. Primary duties include operating trawl and other fishing gear standing wheel watch performing repairs to trawl nets assisting with vessel maintenance and repair and planning and preparing meals for crew and passengers.

Most at-sea work occurs during spring and summer months while fall/winter months offer flexibility. Joining the Resolution crew offers an opportunity to directly support culturally and economically important herring salmon and Tanner crab fisheries in Southwest Alaska.


The working conditions you can expect:

The Resolutions home port is in Kodiak Alaska. From April through September the Resolution makes six or more trawl survey or fishery management support trips ranging between one and five weeks in length. Research cruises primarily occur in the Gulf of Alaska along the Alaska Peninsula from Kodiak to Dutch Harbor. Vessel maintenance net mending and training opportunities occupy fall and winter months.


Specific Requirements:

  • Desire to work at-sea for up to a month at a time.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude problem solving and attention to detail.

  • Interest and experience with planning and preparing meals for vessel crews.

  • Interest in fisheries research and management.

  • Capacity to work closely and cohesively with a team of co-workers from diverse backgrounds.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge skills and abilities:

  • Must be capable of working both independently and cooperatively as part of a vessel/science crew of up to seven and have the physical capacity for remote and arduous work for long periods of time at sea.

  • Deploy and operate bottom trawl pot and other fishing or sampling gear. Operate or direct the operation of auxiliary equipment such as anchor cranes and trawl winches. Independently repair and mend trawl gear. Trawl repairs must be accomplished by following net manufacture specifications and require the ability to read net plans.

  • Maintain the vessel in operating condition by performing or assisting general maintenance and scheduled repairs replenishing supplies and fuel loading cargo and rigging sampling equipment.

  • Responsible for planning and preparation of meals on board and purchasing food for each trip. Maintain galley and living areas in a neat clean and safe condition.

  • Assist biological staff by sorting catch identifying species and weighing and measuring catch.

  • The successful candidate will be placed in the Boat Officer 1 or Boat Officer 2 position depending on certifications and experience. In your application please specify that you are applying for all positions you are qualified for with supporting documentation.

Special Note:

A valid drivers license is required.

This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.

First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

Minimum Qualifications

Boat Officer 1
Six months of work experience as a crewmember on a marine vessel handling gear and other equipment performing wheel watch handling lines performing basic maintenance or preparing food.

Special Note:
Must possess or have the ability to obtain an Ordinary Seaman Merchant Mariners Document.

Must have the physical capacity for arduous work and extended time at sea.

Successful candidates must obtain an Ordinary Seaman Merchant Mariners Document before completing the probationary period.

Desirable Qualification:

A U.S. Coast Guard Operator or Engineer license is highly desirable.

An Able Seaman (AB) Merchant Mariner Document (any grade) is desirable.

TERMINOLOGY AND LICENSES:

DOCUMENTABLE DAYS: Days at sea for which proof of service can be produced. As per U.S. Coast Guard definition a day is defined as 8 hours of work. Because much maritime service is based on a 12-hour day a 12-hour day may be counted as 1-1/2 days.

FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operators Permit: A permit to operate marine radios SSB or VHF.

LICENSES:

U.S. Coast Guard Engineers License: A Merchant Marine Engineering Officer license.

U.S. Coast Guard Masters License: A Merchant Marine Deck Officer license issued with restrictions on gross tonnage of the vessel (e.g. 50 tons 100 tons 1600 tons) as well as route restrictions (e.g. inland near coastal upon ocean). It is recognition by the U.S. Coast Guard of experience and qualification for carrying passengers or freight.

U.S. Coast Guard Operators License: A license formally called Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels more commonly referred to as a six pack license because limitation is to 100 gross tons/6 passengers.

Merchant Mariners Documents

Ordinary Seaman: this is an entry level Merchant Mariner document requiring no experience and no examination. It does require a drug test and proof of citizenship

Able Seaman grade: An able seaman is a rating issued based upon experience and an examination but is not an officer.

SECOND-IN-COMMAND: The person recognized by the master as second-in-command. Authority on the vessel devolves to the second-in-command through and at the discretion of the master.

RELIEF CAPTAIN: The person recognized by the master as second-in-command. Authority on the vessel devolves to the second-in-command through and at the discretion of the master.

VESSEL: In the Boat Officer series specifications the term vessel refers to a vessel larger than 28 feet in overall length.

Vessels are categorized as follows:

Small Vessel 28 feet to 45 feet
Medium Vessel 46 feet to 69 feet
Large Vessel 70 feet and larger


Boat Officer 2
One year of work experience as a crewmember on a marine vessel which includes 360 documentable days underway or sea time handling gear and other equipment performing wheel watch handling lines performing basic maintenance or preparing food.

Special Note:
Must have a U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Masters license

Must have the physical capacity for arduous work and extended time at sea.

Flexible Staffing

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates eligibility. If hired at the lower level you will be promoted to the higher-level job class after completing the training plan and meeting the minimum qualifications.
