As a collaborative member of the Multilingual Learner team this ELD Teacher will be responsible for providing direct language instruction to ML students that serves as a powerful lever to increase English proficiency academic language acquisition and student achievement.
Role Responsibilities:
- Teaches ELD classes to ML students of all proficiency levels that are aligned to WIDA Can-Do Descriptors Common Core Standards and provide students with rigorous opportunities to engage in critical thinking and language learning in all domains.
- Plans curricula and daily lesson plans that are accessible scaffolded and utilize complex texts.
- Promotes a positive classroom environment that celebrates the diversity of the student population and fosters a love of learning.
- Demonstrates a commitment to excellence equity and high expectations for all students by building on the strengths that students bring to the language learning process
- Leverages extensive knowledge of first and second language acquisition in planning and collaborating with general education teaching colleagues co-plans and co-teaches as assigned by building principal
- Communicates regularly and proactively with parents and families in a culturally proficient manner
- Evaluates each students formative progress in English skills (listening speaking reading and writing) and prepares progress reports
- Serves as an advocate for the needs of the ML students on grade level and instructional teams
- Works under the general supervision of the building principal ML Director and/or other designated administrator to review student proficiency levels appropriate ML services and ML data

Job Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree (Required) Masters Degree preferred
- Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in ESL for the appropriate grade level
- Dual Certification (appropriate grade level or Special Education) a plus
- Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement (Required within 1-year of start date)
- Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
- Safety Care Trained or willing to be trained (District provides)
- Proficiency with technology (blended learning teacher/family communication suites (Remind preferred) Google G-Suite Apps etc.) desirable.
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Minimum of 2 years teaching experience and working in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred.
- Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency a plus
- Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply
- Current authorization to work in the United States
Work Year: Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185 day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days. Please click here to view the 2025-26 district and/or school calendars.
Salary: Teacher salaries in the Salem Public Schools are determined by the Salem Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement (see new 2024-27 language with updated salary information here).

Special consideration for English Language Development Teachers:Teachers who provide English Language Development to our federally designated English Learners are required to provide services wherever the need for services exists within the entire district of Salem. While teachers may work at one building for the majority of their career the district may shift ELD teachers to different school buildings within their license area to meet the needs of our federally designated English Learners.
