Hours:7 Hours per Day 180 Days per Year
This position will begin with 2025-2026 school year. New hires may attend paid training days in August.
JOB DESCRIPTION
This position will involve working individually with visually impaired students and assisting the Special Education Department to enhance the effectiveness of learning opportunities for students with visual impairments. The employee may also assist teachers in helping students meet their goals on their IEPs. The person in this position may perform other duties including assisting staff in clerical and record-keeping functions. The employee will perform all duties of the position within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures including regular attendance and punctuality. Other job-related duties may also be assigned as needed.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Passed the Washington StateUEB Competency Exam or National Literary Braille Competency Test or will pass within one year of hire.
- Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree OR 72 quarter college credits OR 48 semester college credits OR a passing score on the ETS test.
- Mustattach unofficial transcriptproving AA or equivalentto transcripts of all levels of education including high school required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Able to utilize literary and Nemeth braille for reading writing and translation purposes meeting the standards as prescribed by the National Library Service.
- Must pass basic skills test.
- Must provide own transportation to various locations in the District. Valid drivers license and proof of insurance required.
- Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
- Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within thirty (30) days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Must pass a background check which includes employee paid fingerprinting.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
- Must attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required as well as attend any training as directed by management.
- Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
- Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful cooperative and effective relationship with students parents staff fellow employees and management.
- Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner working toward the common goal of teamwork pride in service delivery and continuous improvement
- Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students parents district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.
- Must be able to use basic computer programs to maintain records enter timecard information and read and respond to email.
- Must be willing to become first-aid/CPR certified if required.
- Must have excellent listening skills
- Must have excellent English writing skills; grammar punctuation etc.

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
- Experience working with visually impaired students.
- Experience carrying out prescribed instructional management program.
- Experience working with educational and other professionals in a school setting.
- Required academic skills sufficient to assist students and teachers in a wide variety of content area classes.
- Able to model appropriate behaviors and to provide consistent intervention procedures with students.
- Awareness of visually impaired culture and issues.
- Positive evaluations and recommendations that support character and work ethic
- Excellent attendance punctuality dependability self-disciplined and a self-starter.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take direction from Teacher(s) of the Visually Impaired
- Use Braille translation software.
- Use word processing programs.
- Assist staff with modifications and supplemental services necessary for the education of visually impaired students
- Participate in training on any new technology as it pertains to the visually impaired.
- Assist teachers with planning production and organization of instructional materials individual and/or group instruction activities other classroom activities.
- Preparation of Braille materials and manipulative materials in a timely manner.
- Translation of print to braille and reversing translation.
- Preparation of math materials into Nemeth Braille for student instruction
- Correction of materials and record keeping.
- Maintenance of equipment and tools necessary to complete work.
- Provide direct support to visually impaired students.
- Provide interpretive support to students as needed (explain and develop concrete models for abstract thoughts.)
- Guide students through difficult learning challenges while fostering a high level of independence.
- Demonstrate understanding of unique student needs and be able to implement different strategies based on those needs.
- Provide hands on support when needed e.g. science and computer support.
- Review lessons with students teach and reteach content material as needed.
