Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

We are hiring for an Assistant Superintendent to assist in the administration of a juvenile correctional center. Maintain a safe and secure environment to ensure the protection of the citizens of the Commonwealth and the health and safety of incarcerated youth and facility staff. Provide oversight and supervision to all security case management and programming activities and staff.

This is a public- facing position that requires in-person face to face work with the public to include staff and/or juveniles in our care. Requires in-person work with juveniles and/or their families; Requires participation in collaborative/multidisciplinary staff meetings. Requires periodic 24 hour on-call work including after-hours (5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.) and weekend duties.

Core responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Provide direct supervision to the Directors of Security Case Management and Programming
  • Supervise directly and through subordinate staff all facility security operations to maintain a safe and secure environment to achieve goals related to the reduction of Serious Incident Reports (security-related) and resident and staff injuries.
  • Oversees implementation of case management for the institution in accordance with Code of Virginia and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ensures the delivery and documentation of services in accordance with facility standards case management and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ensures the coordination in the delivery of clinical services with the Behavioral Services Unit.
  • Provide oversight of the facilitys intake process to ensure population stability and unit assignments are following department and institutional classification guidelines.
  • Monitors population and takes preventative measures to address facility overcrowding (within scope of authority) behavioral issues and population stability and makes recommendations to the Superintendent no less than quarterly.
  • Visit the facilitys living and activity areas at least weekly to encourage informal contact with staff and residents and assess working conditions; take corrective action as appropriate.
  • Uses data to track and verify identified outcome measures.

  • Capital Resource Management

Minimum Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of adolescent developmental behavior institutional procedures state and federal residential standards and administration and support functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct lead and monitor the work of subordinate staff develop implement and monitor policies procedures and treatment programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments and prioritize activities.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of rehabilitation counseling case management and evidence-based practices.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with departmental and residential standards.
  • Working knowledge of progressively responsible supervisory experience in a corrections facility or related
    field.
