SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR

Qualifications:

  • South Carolina certification as required for the position or eligibility for appropriate certification
  • Excellent coaching and mentoring skills
  • Experience in special education curricula and tools (i.e. Classworks EDPlanSC)
  • Experience and skills in special education data analysis
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Minimum of 5 years of special education classroom experience (preferred)
  • Administrative licensure (Elementary and/or Secondary Principal certification preferred)

Reports To:Director of Special Services

Job Goal

To address the need for improved outcomes for students with disabilities (SWDs) in the areas of academics behavior and social-emotional development. The Special Education Coordinator assists principals special education teachers and related services staff with growth in these three areas. Coaching new and/or struggling special education teachers and support staff will assist in improving outcomes for SWDs and ensuring the fidelity of our special education curricula progress monitoring and instructional tools. The Special Education Coordinator will collaborate with school-level administration in analyzing data for our SWDs and assist in the overall growth of these students.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Work closely with special education teachers who are identified as new to the profession new to the district or underperforming in any area of instruction compliance and progress monitoring.
  • Serve as the lead for Classworks our primary progress monitoring tool in special education.
  • Provide training coaching remediation and assistance with all current special education curricula and tools (i.e. Classworks Project Read Unique Learning Systems Spider Learning TeachTown TouchMath Read 180 Math 180).
  • Continue to research explore and consider new and additional special education curricula and tools for instruction in academics behavior and social-emotional development for SWDs.
  • Work closely with special education teachers and support staff on conducting quality FBAs and BIPs. Assist teachers in our ML programs with behavior analysis strategies and interventions.
  • Analyze needed professional development and work closely with the Director of Special Services to plan implement and evaluate special education professional development.
  • Assist teachers with curriculum design and assessment of student progress.
  • Consult with teachers parents other personnel and/or outside professionals to provide requested information develop plans for services and/or make recommendations.
  • Participate in a variety of meetings workshops and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills Knowledge and Abilities

  • Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include assisting all special education staff in improving outcomes for SWDs. Provides services to children parents teachers administrators paraprofessional staff community agencies and the school system through various special and unique methods.
  • Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes understanding social emotional cognitive physical language and academic factors in children that affect the learning process as well as the use of advanced intervention prevention and follow-up techniques and processes.
  • Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include maintaining confidentiality communicating with diverse groups meeting deadlines and schedules setting priorities working as part of a team and working with frequent interruptions.

Terms of Employment:

240 days per school year; salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of support service personnel.

Physical Requirements:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

Working Conditions:

  • Generally the job requires 80% sitting 10% walking and 10% standing.
  • Requires fine finger dexterity to use office equipment office technology and maintain accurate filing systems.
  • Effectively coordinate a variety of difficult technical administrative functions at a level requiring extensive independent decision-making within established rules policies and procedures
  • Must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • May experience constant interruptions inflexible deadlines and changes to normal routines.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to meet special project deadlines including working 1-2 evenings per month for Board and other public meetings.
