Job Description

GAI is seeking a Cultural Resources Lab Analyst 2 to support an increased number of archaeological collections recovered from various projects across the Mid-Atlanticand Midwestern regions. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising laboratory staff processing analyzing and preparing artifact collections for curation in accordance with state and federal guidelines. The successful candidate will be required to maintain a working knowledge of the various state guidelines associated with artifact processing and curation and exhibit a basic understanding of the Federal Section 106 review process. The successful candidate will be required to work directly with GAIs cultural resource managers and supervisors and will be responsible for preparing accurate artifact data sheets and tables necessary to complete reports and site/resource forms for projects completed by GAI staff. Projects producing artifacts and requiring laboratory review may include Phase I through Phase III studies on both historic and precontact sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise laboratory staff assigned to assist in the processing and analysis of artifact collections.
  • Processing and analysis of artifacts collected from Phase I Phase II and Phase III studies on both prehistoric and historic archaeological sites and when necessary assist in the preparation of reports report tables and site forms associated with client and agency coordination.
  • Responsible for identifying and recording historic and prehistoric artifacts (stone tools pottery historic-period ceramics glass etc.) and entering data into standardized tables needed for cultural resource reports and documents.
  • Responsible for producing accurate laboratory notes and tables needed for report preparation.
  • Responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.
  • This is an office position. The successful candidate will be assigned to GAIs archaeological laboratory in Homestead PA.
  • Travel (including overnight stays) may occasionally be required for trainings and/or on occasions when delivery of artifact collections to a curation facility mandate an overnight stay.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for any and/or all other duties assigned by supervisor.

General Characteristics

Minimum Years of Experience

  • 6 Years of Experience

Education

  • B.A./B.S. Degree in Anthropology Archaeology History Historic Preservation American Studies or associated degree; or equivalent skillsor demonstration ofexcellent field skills

Technical Responsibilities

  • Full-time lab position familiar with state curation guidelines ability torun reports from databases tracks budgets and schedules background research assist in the completion of site forms identifying and dating artifacts (historic/prehistoric small finds) artifact sorting skills note taking photography and scanning skills filing exceptional organizational skills

Project and Task Management

  • Responsible for personal task management and adherence todeadlines and scope

Management Responsibility

  • Takes direction from the most senior lab staff and principal investigators directs analysts andTechnicians with lab duties.
  • Close supervision on work assignments; ability to take direction from a leader

Communication Skills

  • Possesses oral and written communication skills; interacts well with other staff ability to function positively in a team environment; ability to effectively present curation information to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)
