Job Description
Position: Closed Landfill Operations Supervisor II
Location: Chicago Illinois area (covering Beecher Calumet City and South Kankakee)
Employment Type: Full-time on-site field role
Position Summary
This role oversees daily operations maintenance and monitoring activities across multiple closed landfill sites in Illinois. The supervisor ensures all site operations comply with permits and environmental regulations. Responsibilities include managing field monitoring data operating and maintaining environmental remediation systems supervising contractors supporting budget tracking and procurement and liaising with regulatory inspectors and other stakeholders. Frequent travel among sites is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of landfill-specific systems including gas management and collection flare/gas plant operations leachate collection and treatment groundwater and surface water monitoring and SCADA systems.
- Operate and maintain site systems to ensure permit and regulatory compliance.
- Perform routine inspections to identify maintenance needs troubleshoot issues and recommend system improvements.
- Monitor landfill gas collectors conduct gas sampling as required by site permits.
- Document compliance activities operational data and maintenance in required records and reports.
- Use collected data to analyze site performance and resolve operational challenges.
- Learn and utilize digital tools and software for inspections reporting and data analytics.
- Supervise contractors and consultants to ensure quality and timely completion of maintenance and repair work.
- Maintain effective communication with management regarding site status project updates and schedules.
- Implement environmental and safety regulations in line with site permits and company policies.
- Foster positive relationships with regulators local authorities and community stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- At least 4 years of relevant experience in landfill operations or related environmental services.
- Mechanical experience such as heavy machinery repair pump maintenance or field equipment tuning is preferred but not mandatory.
- Knowledge of health safety and environmental regulations applicable to landfill operations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and proficiency with computer applications especially Excel.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly to multiple site locations.
Work Environment
- Primarily outdoor work in landfill and field settings.
- Requires regular site visits and travel between multiple locations.
This position is ideal for candidates with operational knowledge of landfill systems strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to environmental compliance and site management.
