Job Description

The ACLU seeks a Legal Intern in the Capital Punishment Project (Justice Division)of the ACLUs National offices in Durham NC or New York NY. This is a part-time Hybrid position. Intern is required to be based in the U.S.

The Team:

The Capital Punishment Project part of the ACLUs Center for Justice challenges the unfairness and arbitrariness of capital punishment while working toward the ultimate goal of abolishing the death penalty. The Project engages in public advocacy and strategic litigation including the direct representation of capital defendants challenges to systemic problems in the administration of capital punishment and amicus briefing.


What Youll Do:

The intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working with CPP. The intern will be responsible for legal and policy research and legal writing for the Capital Punishment Project.

Your Day to Day

  • Assist with developing strategic legislative and administrative policy options.
  • Assist with preparing and drafting testimony on pending legislation before Congressional committees or federal regulatory agencies and other legislative or regulatory bodies at the state and local/municipal levels as relevant.
  • Assist with coordinating in-depth civil liberties briefings for government officials as pertinent to advancing priority ACLU positions.
  • Help coordinate strategy designed to reach campaign goals or other policy/political outcomes across ACLU departments ACLU affiliates and coalition partners.
  • Conduct policy analysis.

  • Excellent research writing and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills particularly web-based research including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word Excel)

Internship Logistics:

  • Location: Our internship program offers a limited number of remote or hybrid intern positions. This internship is part-time and Hybrid from our Durham N.C. or NY National office.
  • Time Commitment: Part-time (20 hours/week) or Full-time (35 hours/week).
  • Internship Duration: Full-time internships span 10 consecutive weeks and part-time 12 weeks. This internship has a start date of: September 9th or September 23rd
  • Course Credit: This internship is being offered for course credit only.
