Technology Process Control / Automation Subject Matter Expert (SME)

Pay Rate:

$118400 - $157800

Multiple factors including Individual experience skills and abilities will determine where an employee is ultimately placed in the pay range.

The Job You Will Perform:

  • The Containerboard Technology Process Control / Automation SME functions as an internal consultant and is expected to develop projects and drive activity that yield improvement across the company.
  • The duties range widely: safety leadership troubleshooting optimization teaching and mentoring deliberate improvement projects capital projects process audits and strategic studies.
  • The focus area for this position is Pulp and Paper manufacturing processes systems and controls.
  • Travel Requirement: 50-70% required. Ability to travel domestically when required sometimes on very short notice.

The Qualifications Skills and Knowledge You Will Bring:

  • Minimum experience factors and individual attributes of the Process Control / Automation SME
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in operations and service in the process control field with emphasis on pulp and paper manufacturing.
  • A college degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering or related discipline. An advanced degree is not required but may be considered favorably depending on experience factors.
  • Excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to lead technical discussions and effective communicator with all positions across the mill.
  • Ability to provide process technical support on a business priority basis.
  • Capacity to lead and/or participate in several projects simultaneously.
  • Capable of supporting extensive domestic travel.
  • Experience as a Consultant in the Process Control field is desirable.
  • Key Process Control skills and experience factors of the Process Control / Automation SME position:
    • Working knowledge of most manufacturing areas of the pulp and paper mill and a first-principles understanding of the associated process and process control objectives.
    • Demonstrated success applying regulatory and advanced process control solutions and other optimizing strategies across the Mill.
    • Experience implementing and supporting complex automation strategies with distributed control systems (DCS) paper machine quality control systems (QCS) and programmable logic controllers (PLC).
    • Thorough understanding and experience applying regulatory control principles with some experience applying advanced strategies such as multivariable and model-based control (MPC).
    • Proficiency with modern computer programming and scripting languages networking principles and electronic communication protocols.
    • Proficiency with process identification and analysis methods and loop tuning using software tools.
    • Experience using process diagnostics and variability analysis tools as well as process simulation tools.
    • Knowledge of applied statistics including time-series and frequency domain analysis.
    • Experience supporting capital projects and maintenance functions such major equipment rebuilds and supporting mill outages.
    • Working knowledge of industrial instrumentation applications and their performance factors (valves sensors transmitters analyzers).
