Parkland School Division (PSD) is a large progressive school jurisdiction serving Spruce Grove Stony Plain Fort Chipewyan and Parkland County. PSD meets the diverse educational needs of over 12000 rural and urban students among 23 sites including outreach schools and alternative education programs.

The Opportunity:
We are seeking a dedicated and culturally grounded First Nations Mtis and Inuit (FNMI) Liaison to join our team. As part of a collaborative team this role will support schools and students throughout the division as a vital part in fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous students families and communities while supporting the integration of Indigenous ways of knowing throughout our schools.
Key Responsibilities:
Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous students and their families across the Division while promoting a positive safe and nurturing learning environment for student success.
Support Indigenous students through culturally grounded one-on-one and small group interventions that address social-emotional well-being healthy living attendance barriers academic support tutoring and grade-to-grade transitionsall through an Indigenous lens.
Contribute to the development and monitoring of FNMI education goals aligned with school and division education plans.
Encourage Indigenous student participation in school activities to build self-confidence social skills and engagement with learning.
Foster a safe trusting and culturally affirming environment by building positive relationships with students and facilitating conflict resolution in collaboration with staff and families.
Assist Indigenous students in navigating school routines and transitions while supporting positive behaviour and attendance.
Liaison between school staff and Indigenous families to encourage meaningful engagement in school events learning and decision-making.
Support communication strategies between educators and families helping bridge cultural understanding and promote student success.
Promote Indigenous cultural knowledge within schools by coordinating events connecting with community resources and integrating FNMI perspectives into the learning environment.
Collaborate with division staff Elders and Indigenous partners to strengthen culturally responsive practices across sites.
Communication with outside agencies Student Supports & Services community members and administration etc will be required to access resources and community programs.
Travel regularly to various schools across the Division to provide in-person support and consultation.
Qualifications:
Experience working with Indigenous communities and a strong understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions.
Demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships with students families and school staff.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Knowledge of local Indigenous communities resources and protocols.
Assisting with providing orientation to staff and students including unique qualities of FNMI cultural heritage.
Researching and developing a list of resources contacts and services that may be specifically designed to support FNMI persons and liaising with such resources on behalf of school and students. Work as part of a team to build grow monitor and report on a strong Indigenous education program.
Fostering awareness of FNMI culture within schools and communities in collaboration with school staff and community by researching resources and student materials coordinating cultural awareness events and promoting student attendance at cultural events and student conventions/conferences.
A valid drivers license and access to reliable transportation is required as assignments require travel.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma and post-secondary training in the Human Services Field (Child & Youth Care Social Work Educational Assistant etc) preferably including Aboriginal studies.
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and First Aid Certificate.
Knowledge of Truth and Reconciliation and Call to Action work with First Nation Metis and Inuit communities strong familiarity with Indigenous Culture and experience working with Indigenous youth.
1 to 3 years of related experience.
Equivalencies may be considered.
This position requires an original copy of a current criminal record check with vulnerable sector search and child intervention record check.
This position is covered by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 5543.
Hours of Work: 35 hours/week
Pay Rate: $26.43/hour -$29.62/hour
