Your role

We are looking for one full-time Videographer/editor to join our Ottawa team. The successful candidates will perform tasks as specialist in production contributing creatively to programming by frequently composing distinctive visuals within the scope and time constraints of the program. The candidate must be bilingual be good photographer and be prepared to contribute extensively to programming. The candidate will also perform specialized editing tasks in the production of current affairs programming contributing creatively by frequently producing distinctive and innovative material.

Work is performed according to accepted CBC/Radio-Canada or industry standards. There is a wide latitude for independent action judgment and initiative. Duties are performed under the direction of program or other personnel but there will be requirements to work without immediate supervision.

Work is usually performed within established program formats and under high pressure.

Key tasks:

  • Prepare align and set up field cameras ensuring optimum visual and technical quality under prevailing conditions.

  • Light the subject or scene; compose and record program material using a handheld camera. Ensure both visual and aural material meets technical and aesthetic requirements for editing.

  • Deliver all recorded materials including shortlists.

  • In the field perform simple maintenance of equipment.

  • Drive a motor vehicle daily.

  • As assigned or required may perform any or all of the following tasks: ask scripted questions of subjects being recorded; prepare documentation for international travel.

  • Participate in all stages of planning production and packaging of the programs.

  • Edit long-form news programs.

  • Create and add new visual material.

  • Create edit and mix new audio elements.

  • Regularly add textures and effects to images text and fonts by selecting visual effects existing within the hardware or software.

  • Perform all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.

As someone who supports our programming activities you are adept at understanding client needs and designing and implementing creative solutions. You take interest in anticipating future trends and strive to keep us at the forefront of broadcast technology all to ensure we can deliver our programming to our audiences how when and where they want it.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Community college diploma in television arts or equivalent industry experience

  • Excellent level of technical knowledge and understanding of daily television program production methods

  • Three (3) years specialized experience in the news field or remote broadcasting

  • Bilingualism (English and French)

  • Understanding of picture composition and single-camera lighting

  • Experience with (live) television and daily news

  • Good knowledge of current events and Canadian politics.

  • Good IT and new technology knowledge (FTP NGCN iPhone mirrorless camera etc.) - an asset

  • Knowledge of social media - an asset

  • Experience with two-way radios double-ender kits Dejero Teradek and voice recording devices

  • Experience with camera work in a studio or multi-camera live environment

  • Ability to edit recorded items on appropriate/available editing systems; proficiency with Avid Media Composer and Avid NewsCutter

  • Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects - an asset

  • Valid drivers license

  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canadas Journalistic Standards and Practices

  • Valid passport and willingness to undertake assignments involving travel internationally and domestically including high-risk areas such as war or riot zones

  • HEAT (war zone) training - an asset

  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining a calm professional attitude

  • Leadership skills and the ability to pursue the acquisition of story elements with minimum supervision ensuring a high degree of accuracy quality and creativity

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to solve problems creatively; proven initiative

  • Ability to work various shifts; flexibility and willingness to work frequent and extended periods of unforeseen overtime including weekends
