Job Description

Job Title:Head Coach- Unified Volleyball Location:Westerly High School Class: Part TimeEffective Date:07/01/2025Salary Range: $1200 stipendHours per week: 5

Job Summary: This position is responsible for coaching student athletes the basics of Basketball while emphasizing safety and also maintaining the core philosophies of Westerly Public Schools.

Special Olympics Coaching Summary: A Unified Coach has a key role in the Unified team. She or he has the responsibility to form the team and ensure that its working as a team as well as to facilitate social inclusion and meaningful involvement in the team. The coach needs to demonstrate and support this philosophy during training and competition. He or she has the same role and authority to all players with and without intellectual disabilities and cannot be a player on the team.

Responsibilities:

  • Hold organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate in the sport.
  • Maintain good standing within the Special Olympics.
  • Follow state regional and district regulations governing the unified program.
  • Work directly with the pupil services department to secure all additional help necessary to maintain safety of all students.
  • Work with the athletic director in scheduling facilities for practices and competitions.
  • Model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players officials and spectators.
  • Assign duties to an Assistant Coach as necessary.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and provide proper supervision of athletes at all times.
  • Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development while utilizing all assistant(s)
  • Coach and instruct players individually or in groups regarding safety rules regulations equipment and techniques of the sport.
  • Maintain a positive environment in practices and at competitions.
  • Establish team protocol to assure all students needs are met.
  • Follow established procedures in the event of an athletes injury.
  • Act as a team representative and promote the sport by communicating with the news media booster clubs service clubs and other organizations.
  • Work with the athletic director to maintain all equipment and uniforms and provide details of necessary equipment for the following year at the end of each season.
  • Participate in special activities to include parents night banquets award nights and pep assemblies.
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Complete post season summary for the Athletic Department.
  • Ensure safety of student-athletes at all times
  • Promote fair play and good sportsmanship.
  • Communicate with families often.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • Experienced with exceptional education preferred.
  • Education:
    • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Must provide a current national background check without disqualifying results at time of hire.
