POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a skilled position responsible for operational delivery of municipal ground maintenance open space and outdoor recreational facilities and for the day-to-day supervision training and direction of parks maintenance crews. Responsibilities also include the general maintenance of the outdoor ice maintenance program in the winter months. This position reports to the Parks Maintenance Supervisor or Crew Lead II.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform various skilled labour duties to maintain municipal grounds open spaces and recreational facilities.
  • Assess health and condition of grounds and horticultural assets; recommend lifecycle repairs and restoration.
  • Assist in developing the City of Reginas equipment operator training program.
  • Oversee and assist field trainers with field training activities.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of vehicles equipment and tools for grounds and facility upkeep.
  • Provide supervision direction and training to staff on equipment operation and grounds maintenance techniques.
  • Prepare work schedules and assist in developing work plans for Parks Maintenance staff.
  • Maintain inventory and prepare work orders for supplies equipment tools and materials.
  • Respond to inquiries from internal and external customers.
  • Ensure compliance with quality and safety standards and departmental operational procedures.
  • Serve as a certified field trainer.
  • Evaluate instruct and examine equipment operators; certify or determine limitations as per the Citys Equipment Operating Training Program.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance standards methods and practices (e.g. turf athletic fields flower beds trees shrubs).
  • Basic knowledge and skill in park irrigation systems including troubleshooting and minor repairs.
  • Understanding of plant material plant diseases and health factors (trees shrubs weeds).
  • Knowledge of City fleet operations and safe maintenance practices related to municipal equipment.
  • Ability to lead and train employees in equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to identify and correct deficiencies in open space areas and apply lifecycle principles.
  • Ability to safely operate maintain and repair a wide range of grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to delegate assign and schedule staff work effectively considering skills and workload.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to comprehend written instructions and maintain accurate records (electronic and written).
  • Basic computer skills particularly in email; Word and Excel experience is an asset.
  • Ability to perform physical labour in various weather conditions.
  • Commitment to safety and ability to train staff in safe practices.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent education.
  • Minimum of 6000 hours of recent practical experience in Parks and Open Space and outdoor recreational facility maintenance.
  • Completion of at least one horticulture course or certificate required at time of posting.
  • Experience in equipment maintenance in a garage environment is considered an asset.

WORKING / OTHER CONDITIONS:

  • Must possess a valid Class 5 drivers license.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the duties of the position.

  • Successful candidates may be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check per the City of Reginas Criminal Record Check Policy.
  • Proof of education is required.
  • Additional assessments may be conducted to evaluate competencies skills and knowledge.
