Job Description

The Component Engineer (Interconnect and Mechanical) provides technical support to engineering personnel and other service departments regarding component selection specification procurement and documentation. They apply their understanding of mechanical and electrical standards and principles to the selection and lifecycle management of components and technologies as well as providing training guidance and support to junior members of the department and team.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing deep expertise and familiarity with industry offerings trends and technologies within the interconnect cabling and mechanical commodities related to circuit card assemblies. Leverage this expertise for the benefit of the engineering organization.
  • Investigation and selection of new technologies suitable for use in products identifying opportunities for innovation cost reduction improved product performance and long lifecycle support primarily within the interconnect and mechanical portfolio.
  • Create and maintain component data in the corporate PLM System. Including technical documentation export compliance information and lifecycle data.
  • Collect component lifecycle data; develop and implement component obsolescence management strategies that balance technical requirements supply chain risks and business goals. Support the Engineering community related to component management e.g. component selection preferred parts alternative parts and obsolescence resolution.
  • Work closely with design engineers to ensure that new product designs incorporate optimal component selection considering factors such as manufacturability testability and reliability.
  • Communication of technology roadmaps for new development in conjunction with Supply Chain Management.
  • Build and leverage relationships with suppliers distributors and OEMs for the benefit of the engineering organization.
  • Support the maintenance of Approved Manufacturers List (AML) in conjunction with Supply Chain Management.
  • Provide technical expertise to resolve component related issues that arise in manufacturing contact manufacturers and participate in failure analysis and resolution.
  • Support process development and improvement for Component Engineering processes.
  • Analyze and provide hazardous materials PFAS REACH and RoHS material declarations.
  • Direct and conduct counterfeit avoidance processes and efforts.
  • Perform any related component engineering duties as required including supporting Export Compliance processes.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelors degree or Technologists Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronic Engineering or other applicable engineering discipline.
  • Four years of related experience in component design supplier quality manufacturing or design of interconnect and mechanical components.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work well as part of a design team.
  • Process-oriented but innovative thinker.
  • Proficient with database use and maintenance.
  • Solid time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with effective analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • High proficiency with computers and applications such as Microsoft Suite (Word Excel Access Project Visio PowerPoint) and Adobe.

Ideally you will also have some experience in the following;

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with Obsolescence Management including GIDEP.
  • Experience with Component Failure Analysis Life Cycle analysis.
  • Experience with PDMLink (Windchill) or other PLM systems.
  • Working knowledge of interconnect commodities.
  • Knowledge of the Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) manufacturing process and familiarity with CCA component layout design considerations.
