Provides expert employee relations advice and governance to BMO Capital Markets in the U.S. and Canada to ensure that employee relations policies practices and strategies support the business/group strategies and meet regulatory/legal requirements. Manages a team of Employee Relations Business Partners in both the US and Canada and supports various employee relations programs & initiatives including work related to acquisitions divestitures employment transitions separation agreements and outsourcing as applicable for BMO Capital Markets.

As a trusted business advisor:
- Provides employee relations advice and guidance to leaders within BMO Capital Markets and acts as the subject matter expert for internal/external stakeholders on relevant regulations and policies.
- Establishes and maintains a center of excellence for employment law providing governance and supporting activities related to regulatory and legal requirements as required.
- May network with industry contacts to gain competitive insights and best practices.
- May act as a point of contact for regulators / government agencies as required.
- Manages high risk ER matters i.e. Legal case management human rights & harassment investigations workforce transformation initiatives etc. and represents the business in legal proceedings as required.
- Reviews all documentation performs any required negotiation and authorizes separation agreements.
- Monitors legislation and identifies emerging issues and trends to inform decision-making.
- Conducts independent analysis of business strategy and makes recommendations to senior leaders on strategy including highlighting potential risks based on an in-depth understanding of the business/group and legal requirements.
- Supports the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provides support for severance and reductions in force (e.g. consulting with businesses providing templates for severance packages producing calculations & outplacement estimates responding to inquiries from impacted employees/managers).
- Provides governance over employee relations matters by advocating the fair and equitable treatment of employees while ensuring that employee relations practices and strategies clearly support the business/group and enterprise strategies; has the dual challenge to protect the legal and legislative rights of both employees and the organization.
- Investigates senior level employee complaints within area of expertise provide solutions for resolution and ensuring that finds are documented.
- Educates leaders on all aspects of employee relations including relevant HR policies appropriate procedures and practices legislation and regulations and employee relations related training and learning opportunities.
As a senior leader on the Employee Relations team:
- Works collaboratively within and across the team.
- Builds effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders.
- Operates at a group/enterprise-wide level and serves as a specialist resource to senior leaders and stakeholders.
- Applies expertise and thinks creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non-routine.
- Implements changes in response to shifting trends.
- Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications:
- Typically 7 years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Law degree preferred.
- Seasoned professional with a combination of education experience and industry knowledge.

The above represents BMO Financial Groups pay range and type.
Salaries will vary based on factors such as location skills experience education and qualifications for the role and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Groups expected target for the first year in this position.
BMO Financial Groups total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives discretionary bonuses as well as other perks and rewards.
