The City of Johnson City Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Tax Specialist in the Finance Department. Position performs intermediate level professional work related to the review analysis and collection of City tax revenues. Does related work as required. The work of this class involves complex and comprehensive technical work involving the review analysis and collection of City tax revenues (property sales business hotel occupancy tax etc.). The work in this class requires contact with employees businesses taxpayers County and State officials and legal professionals to assist in interpreting and carrying out fair and equitable enforcement of city policies and ordinances and state laws.
Essential Functions of Position:
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of property tax process and cycle (i.e. assessments calculations collection cycle delinquent taxes penalties and interest etc.) sufficient to enable comprehensive analysis and resolution of difficult and complex issues. Knowledge of general accounting procedures and state and local tax and licensing laws. Strong organizational skills attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to research and properly apply local and state laws and ordinances. Ability to make somewhat complex mathematical calculations. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Good knowledge of business English spelling grammar punctuation and business communications. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Associate degree in business administration accounting or related field; a four year degree is preferable; supplemented by considerable experience in a closely related business activity. Pre-employment physical and background check required.
