Job Description

Vice President for Institutional Advancement

The Vice President for Institutional Advancement reports to the President of the University. The VPIA is one of the senior leaders as a Cabinet member of the University.

Principal Duties:

  • Champion and fulfill the Bethel University Christ-centered mission
  • Manage ones own portfolio of major gift prospects approximately 67% time then 33% leadership vision casting and strategic direction of Division leaders:
    • Fundraising staff (covering major gifts planned giving grants annual fund campaigns)
    • Alumni Relations Staff
    • Communications & Public Relations Staff (covering advancement marketing communication storytelling and building a successful goal-achieving department)
  • Refine and execute monthly work outcome scorecards with IA staff on strategies and add necessary metrics essential for the success of the IA division.
  • Cultivate more Friends of Bethel in the local community and region through outreach events active networking and strategic engagement with local & denominational influencers
  • Steward current and recent donors well
  • Enrich alumni services alumni communication and increase the giving rate of Bethel alumni both in number and overall amount
  • Support the Institutional Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees as Cabinet liaison
  • Guide Communications & Public Relations strategy and planning with responsibilities for developing and implementing marketing strategy in collaboration with marketing leader (cross-departmental)
  • Contribute meaningfully to strategic University-wide decisions in partnership with other vice presidents on the Presidents Cabinet
  • Position is an on-campus position needing to be embedded in the local community immediately with transition flexibility given and understood.
  • Other duties as assigned by the President to tailor the position around a candidates strengths

Professional characteristics:

  • Masters degree (Doctoral degree preferred)
  • Relevant certifications desired but not mandatory (CFRE etc.)
  • Experience with relevant professional organizations (CASE etc.)
  • Proven track record in leading a team for Annual Fund drives and capital campaigns of requisite scale to Bethels goals
  • Evidence of experience in personally closing major gift solicitations
  • Knowledge of estate planning
  • 7-10 years of experience in senior leadership as an advancement professional
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Public speaking (large and small audiences)
  • Experience in staff professional development
  • Experience preferred with Christian Higher Education either as an alumnus or parent of a student or alumnus of a Christian University or work experience in Christian Higher Education

  • Demonstrated maturity in the Christian faith (i.e. beyond a profession of faith the capacity to disciple another)
  • Capacity to articulate the merits of this affiliated denomination to denominational constituents doctrinal comfort with University belief statements (denominational membership not required but encouraged)
  • A person of action self-starter
  • Trustworthy above reproach high character authentic
  • Potential for good working chemistry with the President as a close partner in Friend-and-Fundraising
  • Clear communication on weekly expectations of staff (attention to detail and an implementer of strategy and execution toward goal-achievement)
  • Winsome / a friend-maker / capable of building quick rapport and trust
  • Energy / optimism
  • Capacity to calibrate and motivate teamwork
  • Meaningfully contribute to long range strategic planning
  • Ability to identify and value institutional interests separate from the IA division
  • Professional in every manner while representing the University
