Achieving Justice and Protecting the Community
It is the mission of the District Attorneys Office to seek and do justice by assisting law enforcement and other public agencies in the investigation of crimes prosecuting only those crimes which can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt ensuring a fair trial for those accused of crime as well as for victims and witnesses of crimes advocating to the public and to the Board of Supervisors necessary improvements to the criminal justice system and educating the public by providing prompt and accurate information regarding the activities of the office and the administration of criminal justice.

THE POSITION:
District Attorney Investigator is the full working level in skilled investigation work performed in support of the criminal prosecution activities of the District Attorneys Office. The District Attorney Investigator may be assigned to specialized units of the District Attorneys Office e.g. general criminal prosecutions child abduction state prison career criminal consumer environmental real estate fraud auto insurance/workers compensation fraud and auto theft.

The eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur throughout the County.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Thirty (30) semester units or 45 quarter units of academic course work in Criminal Justice Criminology Law Enforcement Police Science or related field which addresses prevention discovery control and treatment of crimes criminals and criminality from an accredited college or university. AND

Experience: Three (3) years as a detective/investigator with a District Attorneys office Sheriffs Department Police Department or other recognized public law enforcement agency whose primary responsibility is the investigation of criminal activity.

Note: To meet this experience requirement the majority of time must have been spent performing duties such as gathering evidence interviewing and locating witnesses investigating crime scenes and writing reports of findings to be used in Court in the prosecution of defendants. Incidental investigative work which is gained through performance of duties such as patrol inmate custodial work accident investigation etc. is not considered qualifying.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid and current California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Peace Officer Certificate. See Document Submittal Requirements for more information.

  • The satisfactory completion of the training required by P.O.S.T. for District Attorney Investigators is required within 12 months from date of hire.

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California drivers license.

DOCUMENT SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Specific college units and a California Basic POST Certificate are required for this position. All candidates must submit a copy of theirofficial or unofficial collegetranscripts(verifying the student institution courses and units completed) andCalifornia POST Basic Peace Officer Certificate by the final filing deadline. Candidates who fail to submit their transcripts and CA POST Basic Peace Officer Certificateby the final filing datemay be disqualified from the recruitment.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: Candidates who attended a college or university that is accredited by a foreign or non-U.S. accrediting agency must have their educational units evaluated by an educational evaluation service. The result must be submitted to the Human Resources Department no later than the close of the recruitment. Please contact the local college or university to learn where this service can be obtained.

Based on the information provided in the application documents the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received the selection process may consist of an initial application screening a mandatory information meeting a supplemental questionnaire assessment a written and/or practical exam an oral board exam or any combination listed. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be used to assess an applicants ability to advance in the process; as such responses to supplemental questions should be treated as test examination responses. A minimum score of 70% is required to continue in the selection process unless otherwise announced.

VETERANS PREFERENCE POINTS:
To be eligible applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions.
