Air & Space Museum - 7711 E Academy Blvd Denver CO 80230 (primary)

Exploration of Flight - 13005 Wings Way Englewood CO 80112


Status & Classification: Regular Full-Time Non-Exempt


Payrate: $19 $21/hour (depending on experience)

$1/hour after successful completion of a minimum 90-day probationary period


Work Schedule: Thursday Monday* 9am 5pm* 40 hours/week

*This position must accommodate a flexible work schedule to include weekends holidays and occasional evenings.

Summary

The Facilities Custodian is responsible for cleaning maintaining and securing Museum facilities to provide an appealing and safe experience for guests visitors and employees. This position consists primarily of custodial and maintenance duties critical for day-to-day operations. As a member of the Facilities department the Facilities Custodian works closely with the Lead Custodian Maintenance Technician volunteers and employees from across the organization. The Facilities Custodian reports to the Director of Facilities.


Organization
Founded in 1994 on the former Lowry Air Force Base in east Denvers historic Lowry Field neighborhood Wings Over the Rockies is a non-profit community organization dedicated to unlocking dreams of flight through exhibits local events and educational programming. We are Colorados official Air & Space Museum having been recognized by CNN Travel as one of their 20 Best aviation museums in the world. Each year we welcome over 160000 visitors representing all 50 states and dozens of countries internationally. Wings is committed to diversity inclusion and accessibility. The Museum boasts more than 100000 sq. ft. of open hangar space full of iconic aircraft space vehicles historical artifacts and more. Visitors can experience thrilling flight simulators discover educational programs and participate in one of our many exciting Museum-sponsored events.


Exploration of Flight (EoF) is our flight-focused educational extension. This 15-acre campus is located at the Centennial Airport where we offer showcase events with a variety of aircraft aviation immersion programs pilot ground training and flight experiences. EoF is home to our Blue Sky Gallery exhibit and interactive aviation center featuring an airworthy fleet of civilian and military aircraft.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Please Note this list is not all inclusive but intended to be a general outline of the essential duties for this position.

  • Custodial upkeep of Museum facilities including exhibit spaces meeting rooms administrative offices restrooms public areas as well as the building exterior and surrounding campus
  • Sweeping mopping dusting wiping sanitizing vacuuming emptying waste receptacles restocking paper supplies waste management snow removal mowing grounds-keeping etc.
  • Operate the floor scrubber (Zamboni) snow plow aircraft tug and other light machinery
  • Maintain a clean Hangar floor free from liquids debris and other slip/fall hazards
  • Follow proper health code sanitation procedures and demonstrate safe workplace practices
  • Help organize and maintain the janitorial supplies inventory
  • Turn-on/shutdown lights exhibits displays stow equipment lock cabinets secure doors etc.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance e.g. minor facility and custodial equipment repairs painting landscaping etc.
  • Assist with the set-up repair and removal of exhibits as needed
  • Work with outside vendors such as plumbers electricians and contract cleaning personnel
  • Identify and report any needed equipment repairs major maintenance issues or areas in need of deep cleaning

Working Conditions

The Air & Space Museum operates in an 80-year-old aircraft hangar. Exploration of Flight is located at a busy regional airport. Environmental conditions may vary.

Requirements
  • Minimum of 1 2 years experience cleaning commercial or office facilities
  • Previous experience in custodial and/or maintenance related fields
  • Familiarity with cleaning chemicals their use proper application and safe disposal
  • Experience operating basic maintenance tools and equipment
  • Attention to detail and deadline-oriented
  • Self-starter with problem solving skills and the ability to work independently
  • Must possess a strong work ethic and professional integrity
  • Able to tolerate strong or unpleasant fumes odors and the handling of waste materials
  • Able to perform the physical workload e.g. climbing ladders repetitive motions etc.
  • Comfortable working in elevated or confined spaces e.g. closets lifts scaffolding etc.
  • Able to tolerate minor cuts scrapes and bruises
  • Able to walk 180000 sq. ft. of floor space and stand for up to 8 hours
  • Comfortable working outside and in varying climate conditions (cold/hot/wet/dry)
  • Able to squat/lift/carry 50 lbs. and push/pull carts or other equipment up to 100 lbs.
