Job Description

Education Administration Intern
Part-Time Summer
Background:
The Education and Guest Services Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernons one million annual onsite visitors and students in classrooms around the country. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences engaging programs and online resources we expand each learners understanding of and appreciation for George Washington and the revolutionary world in which he lived.

During the Summer/Fall of 2025 there will be two interns in the Education Administration department reporting to the Vice President for Education. These interns will have shared responsibilities relating to the major exhibition project in design development over the summer as well as planning community-building experiences for other Mount Vernon interns (summer only). In addition they will each have independent projects to bring to completion.
Compensation:
The salary for this position is $15/hour
Expected Hours:
approx. 32 hours per week from June to August.
Mount Vernon is in the midst of revitalizing our visit experience with major projects including an exhibition on the biography of George Washington . We would like to engage a recent undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in public history in developing key evaluation efforts critical to the success of the visit experience and exhibition.
Sample projects include:
  • One-on-one interviews with adult and youth visitors
  • Development and implementation of a pre-visit survey for adults
  • Highly-focused research to inform the development of visitor personas
  • Iterative testing for hands-on interactives
Specific duties will vary based on the assigned internship but may include:
  • Data Analysis Intern: Cross-tabulation analysis to determine relationships between visitor demographics estate experiences and survey responses.
  • Museum Exhibit Intern: Organize and update image records perform file housekeeping and create exhibit documentation which could include exporting the final script text from the design.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Pursuing an undergraduate or Masters degree in education public history museum studies museum education history or related field. Candidates with a completed bachelors degree with related experience are also eligible to apply.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Ability to work and collaborate creatively and effectively as a member of a team
  • Experience or interest in museum evaluation and/or museum exhibitions

Special Requirements:
  • The successful candidate will be available for some weekend responsibilities

In sum total this group is comprised of more than 150 full- and part-time staff members who connect Mount Vernons mission to a variety of audiences using onsite and offsite programming and physical and digital projects.
