Opportunity Summary:
The Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) student externship at our nonpublic special education day school offers hands-on experience with students aged 521 who present with complex communication needs. Externs will gain valuable exposure to a wide range of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems including both high- and light-tech devices. They will also have the opportunity to work with gestalt language processors and implement supportive strategies tailored to their unique communication styles. Service delivery will include individual and group therapy inside and outside of the classroom and collaborative consultation with multidisciplinary teams. This externship provides a rich immersive learning experience in a highly supportive specialized educational environment.
Eligibility Requirements:
Participate in an interview with the supervising clinician and observe the school prior to accepting the placement.
Learning Model:
The student intern will follow a gradual release learning model beginning with observation and progressing to increased participation and responsibility under the direct supervision of a licensed SLP.
Student Expectations:
During the internship the student should expect to develop practical skills in assessment intervention and collaboration within a specialized educational setting; by the end they will have gained meaningful experience working with diverse communication profiles and a deeper understanding of AAC and other evidence-based practices.
