Job Description:

Job Summary

The Public Relations Officer is responsible for a comprehensive communications and community engagement strategy that supports the strategic priorities of The Salvation Army; while upholding and promoting the values policies procedures codes and conduct and ethics of The Salvation Army Canada & Bermuda Territory.

The Public Relations Officer is responsible for crisis communications earned media events supporting public affairs Advisory groups and the annual kettle campaign in a particular region. Supporting the Divisional Secretary for Public Relations the Public Relations Officer is the spokesperson for The Salvation Army within the region through regular interface with public forums and media to communicate the vital mission impact of The Salvation Army.

Key Accountabilities

  • Act as spokesperson for The Salvation Army ensuring consistent messaging and managing media releases quotes and responses to protect the organizations reputation.
  • Provide accurate and timely updates during disaster responses maintaining consistent and clear communication.
  • Lead crisis communication efforts from development to release including post-release evaluation and metrics.
  • Oversee all communication content including social media video captioning and editorial standards for consistency and quality.
  • Develop impactful stories that highlight mission impact and drive engagement coordinating with local units and THQ for approval and delivery.
  • Develop and lead strategies to secure media coverage positioning The Salvation Army as a thought leader and valuable partner.
  • Prepare and distribute press releases for key campaigns events disaster responses and corporate partnerships.
  • Assist the Divisional Secretary for Public Relations in preparing crisis communications holding statements and related materials.
  • Plan and oversee events to boost engagement brand awareness and fundraising including support and communication for the kettle campaign.
  • Coordinate Advisory Board activities including meeting logistics agenda setting and minute production for divisional leadership review.

Education and Experience Qualifications

  • Completion of a 3 or 4 year bachelor degree in journalism marketing or public relations is required
  • Minimum five years related writing/communications/web/social media experience in an organizational setting with previous non-profit experience an asset
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office WordPress and able to quickly learn new software tools.
  • Strong problem-solving analytical thinking and excellent organizational abilities.
  • Capable of managing multiple priorities with superb time management and project coordination skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills especially for print and online platforms.
  • Flexible with changing priorities and takes initiative with a solution-focused attitude.
  • Effective team player who thrives under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates high standards of judgment confidentiality and professionalism aligned with The Salvation Armys values.
  • Strong customer service background and ability to represent the organization positively.
  • Creative thinker with experience developing and executing special event plans and projects.
  • Deep respect for and commitment to promoting The Salvation Armys mission vision and values in all work.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $49410.00 to $61762.49 with a maximum of $74114.99.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
