Position Summary
The Archdiocese of Detroit is seeking a mission-aligned detail-oriented and relationship-driven professional to serve as the Director of Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship (EMD). This vital role provides visionary leadership and strategic oversight for multiple key ministry areas: Discipleship Formation Family Ministry and Life Issues Sacred Worship Cultural Ministries Campus Ministry and our Deaf Ministry. This role is central to enacting the Churchs mission to form and send missionary disciples in line with Jesus Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).The EMD Director leads a diverse and mission-driven team to support parishes families and individuals across the Archdiocese of Detroit in living out the Gospel in a dynamic and transformative way.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Ability to provide strategic direction across diverse ministry areas.
- Visionary leadership aligned with diocesan priorities.
- Capacity to translate pastoral letters and synodal outcomes into actionable plans.
Missionary Discipleship Formation
- Deep understanding of Catholic teaching and evangelization principles.
- Experience fostering a culture of prayer discipleship and spiritual growth.
- Ability to lead ongoing formation for lay ecclesial ministers and parish leaders.
Organizational & Operational Management
- Skilled in managing multi-departmental projects and initiatives.
- Proficient in resource allocation and budget oversight across complex portfolios.
- Strong organizational development skills especially in ecclesial contexts.
Team Development & Leadership
- Proven ability to build and lead high-performing mission-driven teams.
- Experience mentoring and empowering direct reports to lead their own teams.
- Skilled in change management especially during transitions like No Second Tunic.
Collaboration & Communication
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with clergy staff and laity.
- Ability to collaborate across departments and with parish communities.
- Competence in presenting recommendations to senior leadership including the Archbishop.
Program Development & Implementation
- Experience designing and implementing faith formation and discipleship programs.
- Familiarity with certification processes for parish leadership roles.
- Ability to assess and adapt programs to meet evolving pastoral needs.
Cultural & Pastoral Sensitivity
- Awareness of and responsiveness to the cultural diversity within the Archdiocese.
- Commitment to inclusive ministry that supports all communities including Deaf Ministry and Cultural Ministries.
Qualifications
- Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with a deep commitment to the Churchs mission.
- Masters degree in Theology Pastoral Ministry Religious Education or a related field.
- Minimum of 710 years of leadership experience in diocesan parish or Catholic ministry settings.
- Proven experience in strategic planning team leadership and organizational development.
- Familiarity with Unleash the Gospel Synod 16 and the Families of Parishes model.

- Resource Stewardship: Competence in managing budgets allocating resources and evaluating program impact.
Physical demands
Position requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. May involve some lifting carrying pushing/or pulling of objects and materials (5-50 pounds). May involve extended periods of time standing or sitting at a keyboard or workstation. May involve repetitive motion (i.e. typing). May involve walking long
Travel required.
Local travel within the Archdiocese to parishes trainings and meetings is expected with visits primarily within Southeast Michigan.
