Job Description |
What you will be doing: Autopsy Tech - Assist pathologists residents and pathology assistants in performing autopsy procedures.
- Process and prepare bodies for autopsy procedures including receipt transport (when applicable) and release of bodies.
- Support other Anatomic Pathology lab functions by performing uncomplicated laboratory procedures that involve single-step processes.
- Accurately process organize label and transport specimens for laboratory testing.
- Input and extract data from the laboratory computer system for autopsy and surgical purposes.
- Prepare bodies received in the morgue for the autopsy procedure.
- Hand deliver specimens that cannot be sent through the pneumatic tube system.
- Communicate with other laboratory personnel when specimens need to be transported to other areas.
- Follow up with physician offices regarding outpatient laboratory testing requests without a narrative diagnosis or ICD-10 code.
- Print reports and mail them to the appropriate person once the Authorization of Release of Information form is completed.
- Perform various Laboratory Information System functions including scanning requisitions and accessing the imaging system for verification and results.
- File requisitions reports and other pathology materials appropriately.
- Answer the telephone and refer requests for the delivery of results to physician offices.
- Organize workload and set priorities.
- Keep work area neat clean and well stocked.
- Utilize available work time by assisting others and performing additional tasks.
Experience you will need: Autopsy Tech - Knowledge of established autopsy and care after death procedures including basic anatomy organ prosection and transport and release of bodies.
- Working knowledge of specimen requirements for testing such as serum plasma or whole blood tissue and body fluids.
- Knowledge of different specimen collection containers and media.
- Knowledge of using the patient information system for accurate registration and orders.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients physicians family members and co-workers with a customer service focus.
- High School diploma or equivalent education (e.g. GED verification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completion of post-secondary education).
- Degree in Forensic or Mortuary Science preferred.
- One year of experience working as an autopsy technician/diener.
- Basic anatomy training.
- Previous data entry experience preferred.
