Job Description

The Seattle Times a family-owned news organization and one of the nations premier regional news sources is looking for an experienced real estate reporter to temporarily join our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsrooms business desk. The length of this job is from 8 to 10 months starting as early as Aug. 1 and it is unlikely to be extended. It is a unique opportunity to cover the high-profile real estate beat for The Seattle Times.

The successful candidate will cover critical areas including housing affordability home sales trends rental challenges and mortgage finance. Keeping tabs on the changing landscape of policies and public funding is key to our real estate coverage.

You will be a key player in our daily coverage online and in print. You can expect to juggle breaking news and dailies with enterprise pieces.

Responsibilities

  • Develop breaking news stories and daily articles.
  • Research report and write enterprise stories.
  • Grow awareness and interest in one of the most closely followed beats at The Seattle Times.
  • Be the go-to resource for reporting about the Puget Sounds home pricing rents and projects that reshape our cities and suburbs.
  • Seek out and act quickly on story opportunities on all platforms.
  • Ensure diversity in coverage.
  • Work collaboratively with various teams in the newsroom.
  • Produce compelling reporting about people and businesses involved in local real estate.
  • Navigate digital readership trends based on analytics.

  • Experience: At least two years of professional experience as a staff reporter for a news organization.
  • A willingness to engage with people and bring their experiences into reporting.
  • A track record of writing clearly accurately and creatively and meeting deadlines.
  • A commitment to understanding and upholding the standards ethics and mission of journalism at The Seattle Times regardless of platform.


The successful candidate will have professional reporting experience. While a passion for business coverage is required experience covering business is not. This is a hybrid position based in Seattle that requires occasional night and weekend work.

Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $62425 to $102600. We typically pay between $62425 to $85000 depending on experience and qualifications.
