PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Oversees the maintenance and repair of District vehicles distribute vehicle parts maintain an adequate inventory of shop parts and supplies and purchase District vehicle parts by using the competitive bidding process.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification Requirements
- High school graduate or GED equivalent
- Possess current Texas Commercial Drivers License (Class B)
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Technical Certificates from an approved Technical school preferred
- Possess current Texas School Bus Driver Certification and/or be enrolled in the next available course offered by Region 20 Service Center
- Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check.
Special Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of auto parts and terminology
- Knowledge of automated inventory systems and procedures
- Knowledge of purchasing procedures
- Ability to use personal computer and office equipment
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Master Mechanic and three (3) years of School Bus supervisory experience
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

- Provide supervision and guidance to all Technicians
- Perform major and minor mechanical repairs with no supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Work on projects assigned following established procedures.
- Advise the Assistant Director on all vehicle maintenance issues
- Assist with training procedures for Maintenance Staff and hold maintenance training sessions for training opportunities.
- Develop liaisons with any appropriate maintenance related government agencies and staff.
- Be knowledgeable of all related federal state and local legislation in the maintenance area and update all related staff.
- Implement and oversee a preventative maintenance program for both the school bus and white fleets of the district.
- Work with Bus Drivers and other district personnel in the diagnosis of vehicle problems scheduling of the repair work needed overseeing the necessary repairs and communicating to vehicle operator when job is complete.

- Ensure all safety recall and warranty repairs are performed in a timely manner.
- Assures that field trip buses are prepared in advance with the schedule.
- Implements and oversees a routine cleaning and sanitizing program of all district vehicles.
- Perform quality control checks on repairs and tracks productivity of technicians come backs time on task duration of write-ups etc.
- Lead and instruct technicians in the repair of vehicles in the shop.
- Assists with new employee orientation of the shop and shop procedures.
- Monitors all warranties and assures that all vehicles are repaired as required to ensure the validity of the warranty.
- Assists the Director of Transportation on large purchases of shop equipment and help in the maintenance budget preparation.
- Advise on specifications for bus and vehicle purchases for all departments
- Ensure an adequate supply of fleet parts tires fuel and other fluids maintain emergency parts as needed receive and stock parts as required.
- Daily posting of all parts movement in and out of inventory.
- Assists with the proper disposal of all old parts equipment tires and any other waste materials.
- Assists in the effort to provide fleet consistency and standardization.
- Drive a school bus with or without students on board
- Perform other duties as assigned based on department needs
- Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
- Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
- Ability to use personal computer to access district programs emails and other resources
- Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
- Ensure compliance with the Texas Educators Code of Ethics
- Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises Assistant Shop Foreman Master Mechanics Mechanics Mechanic Helper and work crews

- Work outside work around moving objects or vehicles work on uneven surfaces
- Work alone work prolonged or irregular hours
