Job Description

Position Information

Salary: Level I: $2003.54 - $2394.42; Level II: $2213.71 - $2645.59; paid bi-weekly.

Examinations:
Performance Exam (Qualifying Only): Will consist of an exercise utilizing an emergency dispatch console monitor.

If the number of applicants successful on the performance exam is insufficient to merit an oral exam the performance exam shall be weighted at 100%.

Oral Exam (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of appraising training experience interest and personal fitness for the position.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

The Human Resources Division may solely conduct a performance examination should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant an oral examination. Should an oral examination be necessary the oral examination will be weighted at 100%.

Minimum Qualifications/Employment Standards:
Level I:
  • High School Diploma G.E.D. or equivalent
Level II:
  • High School Diploma G.E.D. or equivalent
  • One (1) year of experience as a Fire Dispatcher I or equivalent position.
Level II also requires:Possession of valid certificate as a National Certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) AND licensure by the Kern County Emergency Medical Department as an EMD II.

Additional Information

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

A background check may be conducted for this classification.

Following an offer of employment you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which appointments will be made by the Fire Department. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
