8.0 hours/day; 5 days/week; 260 days/year

LEAD CUSTODIAN

STANDARD POSITION DESCRIPTION

Classification: Lead Custodian Location: Assigned Building

Reports to: Principal and/or Custodial Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Bargaining Unit: Custodians

This is a standard position description to be used for positions with similar duties responsibilities classification and compensation. Employees assigned to the position description may or may not perform all the essential functions indicated in this position description.

This job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.

Part I: Position Summary:

The lead custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building and physical plant and supporting a learning environment that promotes health attitude and pride of students. In addition to regular building maintenance functions the lead custodian provides direct support to classroom teachers in set up and maintenance of furniture and equipment. The lead custodian also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional courteous and helpful nature. Assists in campus security as necessary.

The district represents a diverse community with a population of approximately 40% students with diverse backgrounds. We seek an individual who has successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities. The selected candidate must demonstrate a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication with the districts diverse populations.

Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:

The lead custodian receives day-to-day direction from the school administrator(s) and receives specific performance requirements from the supervisor for maintenance/custodial. The lead custodian operates within district and school policies and procedures and by applying acceptable custodial standards Labor and Industry standards and OSHA standards.

Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities (depending on specific assignment duties and responsibilities listed may include but are not limited to the following):

  • Cleaning Functions:

  1. Sweep mop vacuum scrub and refinish floors; clean dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish change lights etc.; make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or district standards.
  2. Pick up litter within the schools and on school grounds.
  3. Assure safety during inclement weather to including shoveling salting providing slip protection on wet floors securing against wind damage snow removal from roofs remove debris from down spouts when clogged etc.
  4. Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures.
  5. Adheres to safety measures for cleaning lifting moving and operating equipment.
  6. Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by district maintenance staff.
  7. Removes extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior vertical/horizontal surfaces (walls doors etc.).
  8. Advise building principal/Maintenance Department on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance.
  9. Performs minor painting to walls rails playgrounds and other areas of the school.
  10. Keeps all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness.

  • Administrative Functions

  1. Initiate work order requests according to district procedures. Follow-through to assure that maintenance is performed in a timely manner.
  2. Work with custodial supervisor to order and inventory supplies for onsite use by custodians to include cleaning supplies deicer and light bulbs.
  3. Maintains awareness of energy conservation and make suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy.
  4. Secures equipment and supplies and protects against pilferage loss theft or abuse.
  5. Build understandable and integrated sub plans for assigned site and assigned positions.
  6. Coordinate additional garbage and recycle pickup with Construction and Design when necessary.
  7. Regular inventory of sub key lock boxes inform maintenance department of any discrepancies.
  8. Summer cleaning coordination at designated site.
  9. Inventory maintain and perform minor repair to onsite custodial equipment.
  10. Assist custodial supervisor with building specific training plans for new hires assigned to site.
  11. Assist onsite custodians with Skyward/Q Frontline and email correspondence.
  12. Receive training on locations for emergency shut offs (HVAC water electrical gas) and train onsite custodians of locations when applicable.
  13. Maintain flag etiquette as directed by custodial supervisor regarding raising lowering and inspecting of district flags to include requesting replacement flags when necessary.
  14. Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.

  • Safety and Security

  1. Periodically inspects or otherwise maintains awareness of facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage.
  2. Secures school building to always ensure proper building security. Lock secure and code out building at end of shift.
  3. Verifies that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as need be.
  4. Assists in implementing emergency planning and response.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Part IV: Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Incumbents must have successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
  2. Must have completed an apprenticeship or the equivalent within the specific trade/craft area.
  3. Must be trained in First Aid. CPR and defibrillator training may be required.
  4. Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all District employees vendors contractors and public entities.
  5. Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.
  6. Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision-making capabilities are essential.
  7. Knowledge of state and local codes related to assigned trade/craft.

Must possess a valid Washington State drivers license and a safe driving record and be able and willing to operate district owned vehicles.

Part V: Desired Qualifications:

  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  2. Experience with and knowledge of intrusion alarms automatic fire alarm/sprinkler systems HVAC systems and controls (computer-controlled type experience preferred).

Part VI: Physical and Environmental Requirements of the Position:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to bend sit move about hear and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. Employee may be required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing as working at heights. Required to stand be on feet and move around for a full work shift.

Ability to work using ladders scaffolding mechanical lifts and district vehicles. Ability to spend most of the workday standing lifting and walking. Ability to lift 60 pounds or less and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is required to use properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.

Ability to communicate in person by radio electronically and over the phone. Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports generate service orders maintain inventories etc.

While performing the duties of this job the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during their duties.
