The World This Hour is looking for an experienced journalist with excellent on-air skills to join the program as News Editor / Presenter. Were looking for a creative and smart host to fill a staff leave thats expected to last 18 months.

The Program

The World This Hour is Canadas only live 24/7 national newscast and can be heard on CBC Radio CBC Listen online and on digital devices including smart speakers. Our promise to the listener is that at any time and on several platforms we deliver a brief but dynamic update on the most important national and international news each and every hour.

The role


The successful candidate will be a solid writer editor and communicator with a demonstrated ability to work independently. Hosting an hourly newscast you need to be organized and a multitasker with a proven ability to work under tight deadlines.

This position requires outstanding news judgment critical thinking and understanding of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices. The ideal candidate is a team-player who draws on their own life experience perspective and expertise in ways that will enrich The World This Hours content.

You must be at ease self-operating in the studio using iNews editing and mixing with Dalet navigating MediaCentral and comfortable working with limited support.

This backfill position is based in Toronto working Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 until 20:15.

Key Tasks:

  • Responsible for presenting hourly newscasts aimed at keeping Canadians on top of what they need to know every hour.

  • Exercises editorial responsibility as a key member of the WTH team.

  • Prepares material for broadcast.

  • Writes and vets scripts and edits audio.

  • Plans and determines the lineup story selection and pace of the program.

  • Plans produces and presents breaking news bulletins as directed by program leaders.


We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Post secondary education or equivalent.

  • At least four years of full-time comparable and relevant experience that demonstrates knowledge of news broadcasting and an understanding and awareness of issues and events making news in Canada and around the world.

  • Highly developed on-air skills proven hosting abilities including the ability to deliver newscasts and sustain a live breaking network news special on short notice.

  • Engaging warm and confident on-air personality.

  • Proven journalistic skills including writing copy vetting scripts chasing stories and conducting interviews.

  • Strong technical skills including studio board operation Dalet iNews and Media Central.

  • Interest and knowledge of world affairs and domestic issues and a thorough knowledge of how they affect Canadians.

  • Broad experience and interests from news and current affairs to arts culture and sports and the understanding of the value of these to our audience.

  • Ability to function effectively and cooperatively under pressure in a small team setting.

  • Lives and promotes the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding and appreciation of the different cultures opinions and experiences that make up contemporary Canada (new diverse younger audience).
