Claremont McKenna College and the joint Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Athletics Physical Education and Recreation Program look to support student success and create a supportive environment for recreation health and wellness through holistic wellness opportunities within Roberts Pavilion. This role primarily serves students faculty and staff from Claremont McKenna Harvey Mudd and Scripps Colleges in addition to external constituents.

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Director of Recreation provides administrative support for Claremont McKenna Harvey Mudd and Scripps Colleges recreational programming and intramural and club sports programs. They are visible and engaged with all three campuses to ensure satisfaction among students staff and faculty participants. The Director of Recreation works collaboratively with the Director of Sport Operations the Internal Operations and Facilities Manager and others in the department in scheduling and facility operations and work collaboratively with CMS leadership to promote and build student engagement programming around CMS Athletics competitions. Additionally the Director of Recreation oversees Recreation Staff and Intramural and Club student staff workers.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director the Director of Recreation performs or works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Intramurals and Club Sports

  • Develop a comprehensive intramural schedule featuring competitive sports and recreational activities including semester-based leagues and a variety of one- or multi-day tournaments for CMS students faculty and staff.
  • Coordinate and manage 5C club sports programming working closely with the Pomona-Pitzer counterparts to schedule practices and competitions.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Athletic Facilities and Sport Operations as well as partners at Harvey Mudd and Scripps Colleges to schedule facility and field needs for intramural and club sports.
  • Serve as the approver and advisor for all sport-related clubs at Claremont McKenna College and work with the Harvey Mudd and Scripps College Deans on the approval of new club sports.
  • Conduct routine visits to intramural and club sport events to ensure alignment with departmental standards and values.
  • Develop and deliver training materials for monthly leadership sessions attended by CMS Recreation and 5C club sport officers.
  • Allocate merit-based funding to CMS Recreation and 5C sport clubs based on their submitted and approved annual plans for competition-based travel.
  • Communicate with student leaders on each campus to develop programming aligned with the interests of CMS students faculty and staff.
  • Create administer and evaluate surveys gather feedback from CMS students faculty and staff on programming after their intramural seasons.
  • Maintain comprehensive manuals for club and intramural sports outlining key policies procedures and operational standards.

Facility Operations

  • Collaborate with the Internal Operations and Facilities Manager to review vendor contracts and coordinate the procurement of equipment for club sports intramurals and recreation operations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Athletic Facilities and Sport Operations and the Internal Operations and Facilities Manager to ensure the ongoing upkeep safety and functionality of Roberts Pavilion.
  • Oversee guest pass sales and membership policies for Roberts Pavilion providing guidance and administration of related procedures.
  • Manage and maintain software systems that support CMS Recreation.

Engagement

  • Develop and execute marketing strategies to promote the intramural and club sports programming through social media campus tabling CMC and Roberts Pavilion digital signage and other outreach channels.
  • Collaborate with CMS leadership to enhance student engagement programming around CMS Athletics contests.
  • Partner with Admissions and Student Affairs on all three campuses to create engagement events/opportunities for prospective and incoming students.
  • Coordinate all promotional efforts to raise awareness and visibility of CMS Recreation within the campuses.

Recreation Department

  • Manage the CMS Recreation annual budget which includes funds for intramural and club sports recreation and Roberts Pavilion. Assist with budgeting decisions consistent with the departments decision-making and planning priorities.
  • Assist the Coordinator of Recreation and Wellness in the evaluation of all fitness and wellness class curriculum hiring of instructors and class scheduling.
  • Assist the Recreation and Guest Services Administrator with student staff management for Roberts Pavilion operations

Staff Management

  • Direct oversight of the CMS Recreation staff including the Coordinator of Recreation and Wellness the Recreation and Guest Services Administrator and intramural student staff.
  • Oversee orientation and training for CMS Recreation staff.
  • In coordination with CMS Human Resources facilitate the hiring and onboarding of all Recreation staff.

Perform any other duties and/or jobs deemed necessary for the functioning and success of CMS Athletics Physical Education and Recreation.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS:

EDUCATION: A Bachelors degree is required. A Masters Degree in a related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years of Recreation Management Club Sports and Intramural experience with increasing responsibility in Intramural programming and Staff Supervision. Experience working on a college campus with or reporting to an Athletic Department is preferred.

LICENSES: May be required to transport staff game day officials or complete other job-related work off campus. A valid drivers license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the Colleges authorized drivers policy.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS and ABILITIES: The individual must possess knowledge skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed with or without reasonable accommodation using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

  • Appropriate certifications in First Aid CPR and AED.
  • Follow all written and verbal asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments
  • Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word Excel Outlook PowerPoint) and associated professional software such as EMS Lenel or Fusion. Demonstrate understanding of the use of technology/devices/equipment in assessing and improving facility operations systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Handle all activities and often confidential information with patience discretion good judgment courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks meet deadlines/timelines respond to others in a timely manner and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics in support of the Colleges strategic vision and the divisions/departments annual goals.
  • Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
  • Effective accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal written interpersonal reading phone and leadership skills to supervise facilitate motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of employees.
  • Collaborate effectively with employees parents students alumni volunteers community partners and stakeholders as needed.

OTHER

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position vary with the flexibility to set work hours appropriate to the needs of the department. Holiday weekend and evening work hours will be required. Some travel may be required.

APPROXIMATE SALARY RANGE: The anticipated salary range is $68640-75000 per year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BACKGROUND CHECK: The successful candidate will be required to undergo a full consumer background check. Certain positions will require the successful completion of a postoffer physical agility test.
