Job Description

Position Summary

Department: School of Arts and Sciences
Reports To: Fine Arts and Humanities Department Chair
Status/Time Commitment: Ongoing (as needed)
Start Date: 08/18/2025


Course Description:

Com 110: Written Communication offers instruction in formal academic writing focused on the most frequently assigned academic genres. Students will create compelling arguments to support a claim engage a variety of rhetorical situations analyze secondary sources utilize appropriate style guides and implement instructor and peer feedback.

The course is designed to develop reading and writing skills that will transfer into any field of study preparing students to analyze and address the different kinds of writing they will encounter in the university and later in their careers. This course will consider the rhetorical situations of various texts (i.e. the relationship between a texts audience purpose and genre) to lay a foundation in critical thinking skills and college-level writing.

  • Teach courses as described and assigned
  • Discuss class progress with the program coordinator including teaching performance through observation
  • Collaborate with other faculty as needed
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving and inspiring students in an academic context that integrates your Christian faith and learning.

Qualifications

Required:

  • M.A. or Ph.D. in English Composition or a humanities-related discipline
  • Ability to work with students staff and faculty in a collegial environment
  • Commitment to the Christian faith and the Universitys mission of Christ-centered teaching and learning and involvement in a local church.

Preferred:
  • Specialization in Composition Studies college-level writing instruction Public Speaking and/or Communication Theory
  • Experience teaching college-level writing courses especially teaching at the General Education level for first-year college students
  • Experience working with an ethnically and culturally diverse student body
  • Willingness to teach course as currently scheduled

Environmental Conditions:
  • Indoors in a normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise dust fumes vibrations and temperature changes at least eighty percent (80%) of the time.
  • Frequent computer use at a workstation up to eight hours per day.
  • Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.
  • Drive personal or University vehicles to appointments.
  • Public contact position requiring professional apparel personal hygiene and grooming.

Physical Demands:
  • This position typically functions indoors in an office environment with light to moderate noise associated with business office equipment. The position may involve travel for meetings and events.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to: remain in a stationary position 80 % of the time be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets/office machinery etc. operate a computer and keyboard and other office productivity machinery such as calculators/copy machines/printers. The employee is occasionally required to position self to reach items on the floor and in high cabinetry.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Employee must be able to communicate with others to exchange information including both over the telephone and in-person communication with callers and community members and be able to read a computer screen and paper documents.

Compensation is based on highest completed degree level:
Masters degree: Anticipated pay per unit $811.51 $23.97 per hour
Terminal degree: Anticipated pay per unit $977.98 $28.82 per hour
