Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia is looking for a dynamic Astronomy Educator to bring our immersive technologies to life creating and delivering unforgettable live presentations for our museum guests in The Dome.


In this dynamic role youll create and deliver captivating live presentations that inspire and educate Museum guests of all ages. Whether engaging directly with visitors or producing scripted planetarium shows youll share the latest scientific discoveries and spark curiosity about astronomy like never before. Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and demonstrated ability to plan and implement informal science educational programs and events. A strong working knowledge of astronomy including the capability to interpret astronomical data from almanacs star charts books and internet resources as well as familiarity with current astronomical events. The candidate must be enthusiastic and passionate about teaching people from diverse backgrounds with the ability to effectively engage with the general public school groups staff members and volunteers. Experience working with multiple age groups in informal educational settings. Strong oral and written communication skills along with excellent interpersonal skills are essential. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to schedule manage and supervise volunteers and when needed paid staff. Effective problem-solving skills and previous experience with basic PC and audio/visual equipment troubleshooting and maintenance are important. Patience flexibility and a commitment to working with children are necessary. Finally the candidates should be proficient in using G-Suite software or similar applications for word processing spreadsheets databases and presentations. Be comfortable working in a highly collaborative fast-paced environment while also possessing the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must be able to work evenings weekends and holidays.

Additional Considerations

Experience or a strong interest in astronomy science education or related fields is a plus. Previous experience delivering educational programs in giant screen theaters or planetariums is highly valued. Additionally experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications such as Photoshop After Effects and Premiere or familiarity with scripting languages like JavaScript or Python is a plus.
