Job Description

Job Title: Counselor
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Principal
Pay Grade: Teacher Pay Scale
Days: 198

Dept./School:South San High School

Primary Purpose:
Work with school faculty and staff students parents and community to plan implement and evaluate a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program at school assigned. The School Counselor will provide educational career social and personal guidance and counseling for all students.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Masters degree
Valid Texas School Counselor Certificate
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee

Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of counseling procedures student appraisal and career development
Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Experience:
Minimum two (3) years teaching experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Guidance

  1. Plans organizes and implements campus developmental guidance curriculum consistent with districts guidance program plan and tailored to campus needs.
  2. Assist teachers in the teaching of guidance-related curriculum.
  3. Guides individuals and groups of students and parents to develop education plans career awareness and personal/social development.

Counseling

  1. Uses accepted theories and effective techniques to provide individual/group developmental preventive remedial and/or crisis counseling.

Consultation

  1. Consult with parents school personnel and other community members to help them increase the effectiveness of student education and promote student success.
  2. Maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information to other professionals as appropriate.
  3. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community resources.

Coordination

  1. Coordinates people and other resources in the school home and community to promote student success.
  2. Uses an effective process when referring students parents and/or others to special programs and services.

Student Assessment

  1. Participate in planning and evaluation of campus standardized testing program.
  2. Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately and communicate to school personnel students and their parents in an effort to guide students in individual goal setting and planning.
  3. Adheres to legal ethical and professional standards related to the assessment.

Program Management

  1. Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet identified needs priorities and program objectives.
  2. Implement a comprehensive and balanced program.
  3. Collaborates with school personnel students parents and the community to plan implement evaluate and promote continuous improvement of a developmental guidance and counseling program.
  4. Advocates the school developmental guidance and counseling program and counselors ethical and professional standards with school personnel parents student and community.
  5. Compile maintain and file all required physical and computerized reports records and other documents.

  1. Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and board policy in guidance and counseling area.
  2. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  3. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  4. Communicate effectively with colleagues students and parents.
  5. Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and responsible.
  6. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Environment: Work inside may work outside
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; may work prolonged or irregular hours
