Function: The Title I Social Worker will provide support counseling to students & families experiencing crisis impacting educational progress; provide faculty training on addressing issuesEssential Duties and Responsibilities: Analyze data to identify students presenting with risk behaviors or conditions which may cause interruption or incompletion of a full school experience Counsel targeted individual parents toward improving the home situation whereby more favorable conditions will be attained in regard to schoolwork behavior attendance and with teachers and parents to meet the needs of targeted students through the development of academic personal social structured counseling activities for at-risk youth i.e. issues around social and cooperates with guidance counselors school psychologists principals nurses and classroom teachers in assessing the mental and emotional health of the individual student having school difficulty and in evolving appropriate initiative in planning developing implementing and evaluating programs and services to meet the needs of targeted students who have special problems adjusting to school Directly assist students with adjustment problems and when necessary refers students to appropriate specialized personnel such as school psychologists and/or other counseling with other school personnel in case students with critical needs in consultation with their parents to appropriate community resources and follow up with students as closely with and serves as liaison between the school and outside agencies such as the Department of Public Welfare and the Department of Social Services the Police and the as an advocate with students utilizing skills that respect issues of cultural and ethnic diversity and equity for every student and and continually update a directory of referral services to be utilized in crisis situations affecting students such as suicide threats alcohol or drug induced traumas and the the Behavior Intervention Specialists role in supporting the school improvement plan and the implementation of the Title I Program Maintain records consistent with ethical and legal guidelines. Operate within the federal and state laws and the established district and school procedures and policies. Provide support for other school and district programs and district professional development and meetings. Keep informed of current professional trends. Utilizes computers effectively in the performance of assigned duties and other duties as assigned by the Principal in accordance with Title I guidanceRequired Qualifications:The applicant must qualify for a School Social Workers certificate issued by the R.I. Department of Education.A Masters Degree in social work from an institution approved by the State Board of Regents will be required in addition to a background of experience which is broad and least three (3) years of experience as a school social worker preferredSuccessful experience in dealing with inner-city families preferred
