CBC News is looking for a skilled digital journalist with a strong understanding of U.S. politics and Canada-U.S. relations to join its Washington D.C. bureau.

News never stops in Washington and the successful candidate for this position needs to be comfortable helping our audience make sense of how the Trump administration affects Canada whether its about tariffs or trans rights.

Writing to tight deadlines is a primary demand which includes filing daily news and analysis stories as well as breaking news posts for live pages. This role also requires maximum versatility and reporting skill across audio and video platforms including Youtube and TikTok.

The CBC News Washington bureau constantly juggles breaking news daily files and original journalism. To succeed in this role you will need to be a U.S. politics junkie and know how to make complicated policy understandable and relevant to audiences in Canada. You will constantly pitch ideas and wont hesitate to work a source to help you land scoops or write original stories. Youre not scared off by misinfo or disinfo; in fact you might see it as an opportunity to set the record straight.

This position requires overtime and may include regular work on evenings and weekends including extended assignments away from Washington on short notice. Candidates should have at least 7 years of directly relevant experience in the field including coverage of politics and international news.

This is a permanent position and the expected start date for this position is September 1 2025.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch report and write stories balancing news with enterprise stories and original analysis

  • Write/publish 2 to 4 stories per week including analysis pieces

  • Research report interview fact-check write and package stories before sending them to the copy desk

  • Recognize newsworthy issues and events and take immediate and effective action to ensure appropriate coverage

  • Respond to breaking news as required and file quick analysis into live story pages

  • Collaborate with assignment and the social media teams as needed to develop ways of telling stories on TikTok YouTube and other platforms

  • Work collaboratively with editors to sharpen headlines and text and package digital stories according to mobile-first considerations

  • Identify and pursue a diverse range of sources

  • Report across all platforms as necessary

  • Deploy to other regions of the United States as required

Relevant qualifications:

  • Minimum 7 years recent experience as a journalist covering politics and international news with a track record of breaking stories or writing impactful analysis

  • Strong journalistic skills and knowledge of U.S. politics and Canada-U.S. relations

  • Substantial experience writing researching fact-checking and packaging digital news content

  • An established network of legal and political connections with proven ability to access it to generate scoops

  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism and firm grasp of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices

  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity

  • Excellent news judgment and ability to work effectively under 24/7 deadline pressures

  • Proven ability to file same-day stories

  • Experience filing to live pages is an asset

  • Stellar communication and interpersonal skills

  • Aptitude with text and video content management systems

  • Knowledge of style is an asset

  • Experience in Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Optimization

  • University degree or equivalent
